The Boston Bruins may be waving the white flag on their 2024-25 NHL season, as one star could be traded to the Calgary Flames. Brad Marchand, who is dealing with an upper-body injury, could lose a key teammate as the Bruins fight for a Stanley Cup Playoffs berth in a jam-packed Eastern Conference.
The Bruins haven’t had the success they envisioned this NHL season. It was rocky from the start, as the franchise in Beantown parted ways with head coach Jim Montgomery early in the year, but interim head coach Joe Sacco has been unable to right the ship.
Boston has now lost six of their last seven games, slipping down the standings and losing vital ground to their competitors for the wildcard spots in the East. While the locker room remains hopeful about their odds, the front office may have a different mindset. Boston may have a seller’s approach during the upcoming trade deadline, looking to move on from talented players while their price is high.
Marchand himself has been in the center of many rumors, yet it’s unclear whether the organization is serious about losing their veteran leader. Regardless, changes could be coming to the team, as one star blueliner has been closely sought after by the Calgary Flames.
According to reports from TSN’s Anthony Di Marco, the Flames are looking to finalize a deal for Bruins’ Brandon Carlo. “Teams have yet to dive into details, but CGY is interested,” Di Marco said.
Upgrade on defense
Di Marco’s reports add up with NHL insider Elliotte Friedman, who reported the Flames were looking to ship away defenseman Daniil Miromanov. While the trade may not involve the Flames’ blueliner directly, it seems Calgary is looking to bring in the 28-year-old star in Boston to replace Miromanov.
Marchand’s injury
Brad Marchand sustained an upper-body injury during the Bruins’ win over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Saturday. While the team has yet to make an official announcement on his injury, Friedman revealed the length and severity of the captain’s absence.
“It looks like Brad Marchand will be out until after Friday’s trade deadline, but that it’s not a long-term injury,” Friedman said on this week’s “32 thoughts” podcast.
