The Indiana Fever started the 2025 season strong, defeating the Chicago Sky 93-58. Caitlin Clark shined with a triple-double, but the night also came with controversy. The WNBA announced an investigation on allegations of racial slurs from fans seemingly aimed at Sky’s star Angel Reese.

The league released a statement condemning “racism, hate, and discrimination in all forms.” Meanwhile, The Fever confirmed they were going to collaborate with the WNBA in the investigation.

Clark addressed the issue on Monday, condemning the alleged comments. “There’s no place for that in our game, there’s no place for that in society,” she said, according to a video shared by Chloe Peterson. “We certainly want every person that comes into our arena, whether player, whether fan, to have a great experience.”

She also admitted that she “didn’t hear anything,” she trusts the league’s procedure. “That’s why they’re looking into it. That doesn’t mean that nothing happened. You just trust the league’s investigation and I’m sure they’ll do the right thing,” she explained.

Clark and Reese clarified their tense moment on court

IndyStar clarified that the WNBA’s investigation is not related to the take foul committed by Caitlin Clark on Angel Reese in the third quarter, which was later upgraded to a Flagrant 1. The foul occurred as Clark stopped a fast break, sending Reese to the floor.

Reese quickly got up to confront Clark, but Aliyah Boston stepped in to defuse the situation. While Clark walked away, both Reese and Boston received offsetting technical fouls for the exchange.

After the game, Reese downplayed the moment, calling it a “basketball play” and agreed with the officials’ decision to upgrade the foul to a Flagrant 1. Meanwhile, Clark said that there was “nothing malicious” about the play.
