Notre Dame Fighting Irish star Hannah Hidalgo keeps making a name for herself. She hasn’t always made the rounds for the right reasons, but she’s clearly one of the driving forces of <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-basketball" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">college basketball</a> right now.



Controversial and often criticized for her views, the outspoken tweener guard has let her game do all the talking on the basketball court. And her game speaks volumes.



That’s why she joined an elite and very exclusive list of players after an incredible season, earning both ACC Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year honors.



<h2>Hannah Hidalgo wins two major prizes after incredible season</h2>



“Hidalgo’s terrific sophomore campaign was rewarded with Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year honors, making her the third player in ACC history to win both awards in the same season,” reported Jack Maloney of CBS Sports. “A menace on both sides of the ball, Hidalgo averaged 24.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 3.7 steals, the latter of which led the ACC and was good for fourth in the country. Thanks in large part to Hidalgo, the Fighting Irish earned a share of the ACC title.”

While the Duke Blue Devils gear up for their regular season finale against the North Carolina Tar Heels, Jon Scheyer learned one assistant coach in his staff won’t return to the program for the 2025-26 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ncaa">NCAA</a> season. Freshman sensation Cooper Flagg, who has yet to announce his decision on his future could lose a key coach for his sophomore campaign if he elects to stay for one more year.



Duke closed out their season at home with a commanding 93-60 rout of the Wake Forest Demon Deacons. However, the biggest challenges lie ahead for <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/cooper-flagg">Flagg</a> and the Blue Devils, as they embark on the decisive instances of the year.



Up next, the school coached by Jon Scheyer will make the 13-mile commute to Chapel Hill, to take on the Tar Heels at Dean E. Associate head coach Jai Lucas is set to become the next head coach for the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/miami-hurricanes">Miami Hurricanes</a>, as reported by On3. However, Lucas will remain with Scheyer and Flagg in Durham until the season concludes, before heading to South Florida to take over the program in Coral Gables.

While the season is far from over for the Blue Devils, with everything they’ve worked for within reach, Jai Lucas couldn’t hide his emotion after earning the head coach title at such a prestigious university.



“I am incredibly grateful and honored to be the next head coach at the University of Miami,” Lucas stated. “Miami has everything you need to compete at the highest level — elite academics, a passionate fan base, and a commitment to excellence in athletics. Beyond that, the city of Miami has a rich culture and energy that makes this an incredibly special place. The history, diversity, and passion for sports here are second to none.”

As the Crimson Tide shifts its focus onto the eternal rivals, Auburn Tigers, head coach Nate Oats sent a powerful reminder to his players.



After a buzzer-beater loss to Tennessee, No. 7 Alabama failed to get back in the win column during its Senior Night matchup against <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/florida">Florida</a>. The Crimson Tide has now lost two straight for the second time this season, previously dropping back-to-back games to Auburn and Missouri on Feb. 15 and 19.



Oats and the Tide will vie to avoid a three-game losing skid as they prepare for a crucial <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ncaa">NCAA</a> showdown against their in-state rivals in Auburn. Alabama’s last performance fell well short of the standard set by Oats and his staff, and the head coach didn’t mince words after the game.



“It doesn’t matter what your game plan is, if you don’t get back on defense and you can’t get a rebound,” Oats stated postgame, via On3. “We’re gonna have to figure it out before we go to Auburn. We knew that coming into this game,” Oats added. “But we’re playing for SEC Tournament seeding, we’re playing for NCAA Tournament seeding. I thought we’d get a little bit better effort than what we got out of some of these guys tonight.”



Though the losses have taken a toll on the team’s morale ahead of the Alabama-<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/auburn">Auburn</a> matchup, the Crimson Tide are already locked into the SEC quarterfinals, as they cannot fall below the No. 4 seed.

The <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/kentucky">Kentucky Wildcats</a> waved goodbye to Rupp Arena and the Big Blue Nation after their final home game of the 2024-25 NCAA season. Following a rout of the LSU Fighting Tigers by a lopsided score of 95-64, head coach Mark Pope took the mic to address the home crowd for one last time this season, delivering a bold warning to the rest of the schools.



Kentucky didn’t disappoint in the slightest on the school’s Senior Night. In an emotional matchup, the Wildcats blew the Tigers out of the water. The loss was yet another setback in a challenging season for the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-basketball">college basketball</a> program in Baton Rouge.



Kentucky (overall record 20-10) improved to a 9-8 SEC record in the campaign, and sitting as the 8th seed in the league ahead of the SEC tournament, being held in Nashville from March 12-16.



As Pope and the Wildcats gear up for the most critical stage of their season, the first-year head coach in Lexington delivered a clear message to the program, along with a warning to the rest of the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ncaa">NCAA</a>.

“Beating Duke, super special. On the road at Gonzaga, super special,” Pope enlisted Kentucky’s biggest wins during his first year at the helm, per On3. “Of course, we beat Louisville. But we’ve got a lot more to do! So we’ll see you in Missouri on Saturday. We’ll see guys in Nashville and then the NCAA Tournament.”

<h2>Riding the highs-and-lows</h2>



It’s been a tumultuous season for Pope and Kentucky, with pivotal lessons learned along the way. As Pope reflected about his first year in Lexington, the Wildcats head coach made something clear about his team’s mindset, especially after finding out of Jaxson Robinson’s season-ending injury.



“It’s hard to make sense of why he doesn’t get a chance to finish this with these guys. It’s really brutal,” Pope admitted.”I think, the guys are devastated for him and really sad for us because he is such a massive part of this team. At the same time resolved that, and we are going to try to find a way to win with what we have today.“

Kentucky HC Mark Pope warns the rest of the NCAA

The No. 1 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/auburn">Auburn Tigers</a> fell in shocking fashion to the No. 22 Texas A&amp;M Aggies during their visit to College Station. Though the Tigers have already clinched the SEC regular season title and are heavy favorites for the NCAA tournament, head coach Bruce Pearl didn’t hide his frustration, making something clear about their performance.



Auburn’s six-game win streak was snapped at Reed Arena, as Texas A&amp;M delivered a statement victory over the apex predator in <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-basketball">college basketball</a>. The Tigers’ last defeat had been on Feb. 8 as they lost to the Florida Gators at Neville Arena.



While deflating for the team’s morale ahead of the crucial month of the year, the loss in College Station could become a strong reminder for the Tigers not to rest in their laurels. It also put on display the league’s strength, as the sixth seed in the SEC took down the No. 1 program in the country.



Auburn has only lost three games in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ncaa">NCAA</a> season, and just twice in their SEC schedule. However, Pearl had steam coming out of his ears after squandering the game against the Aggies.

“We just got physically punched in the mouth. We just got physically run out of here. They physically manhandled us,” Pearl admitted postgame, via USA Today. “And if this team is going to continue to win, we’re going to run up against teams like Texas A&amp;M or like Florida or like Duke that are big and physical.“

<h2>Out-muscled</h2>



The Aggies’ 83-72 win over the Tigers can be explained by the physical dominance the home team enforced on Auburn. Despite the Tigers posting better shooting percentages, the battle on the boards cost Pearl’s team heavily.



“We have no excuses to allow those guys to get 24 offensive rebounds,” Pearl added. “I give Texas A&amp;M all the credit. Our guys were physically dominated. So no, I don’t excuse our guys at all. We’re better than that, but not tonight.”



Texas A&amp;M finished the night with 41 total rebounds, while Auburn had just 25. The Aggies had one less offensive rebound than the Tigers had total rebounds, a recipe for disaster that helps illustrate why Auburn fell in The Lone Star State.

Fast forward to today, and that hasn’t changed.



In his first — and most likely lone — season with the Duke Blue Devils, the young star has left averages of 19.6 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.6 steals, and 1.2 blocks on 49.7% from the floor and 38.2% from three-point range. 



Needless to say, any coach would be fortunate to have such an elite recruit. Nevertheless, as good a player as he is, Jon Scheyer believes his personality and maturity will lead him to stardom.

“Yeah, I think the, the talent speaks for itself. Love coaching his talent,” said Scheyer. “But, I’ve loved coaching the person. You know, he’s, he’s all about the right stuff.”

Scheyer was thankful for the opportunity to lead such a unique player. He raved about his ability to do a little bit of everything on the court, as well as his competitive fire:



“He plays so hard, he’s competitive, great teammate and, obviously, his ability is special. So, as a coach, it allows you to do a lot of different things because of his versatility. You know, he’s guarding one through five. You know, there’s not really a matchup for him. If you double him, he passes it. If it’s one-on-one, he scores it. He just has that feel for, when the game’s on the line or the game rises, he’s going to do that himself,” he continued.

Dylan Harper and Ace Bailey are both projected to be among the first three players taken off the board in the 2025 NBA Draft, even in spite of their team’s shortcomings.



However, if he had to choose just one of them, NCAA analyst Noral Parham would blindly go with Ace Bailey, who he chose as one of his ‘must-watch’ players ahead of March Madness.

“Ace Bailey is a pivotal force for the Rutgers Scarlet Knights this season. Standing at 6-foot-10, Bailey’s versatility allows him to effectively impact both ends of the court. Throughout the 2024-25 season, he has averaged 18.2 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game,” Parham wrote.

Bailey isn’t known for his defensive instincts. Nonetheless, Parham argues that his steals and blocks numbers prove that he can also be a factor on the defensive end of the floor:



“Despite the Scarlet Knights holding the No. 14 seed in the Big Ten Conference with a record of 7-11, the two-way freshman often shows his defensive prowess, averaging his defensive prowess, marked by 1.3 blocks and a single steal per contest. Despite being a freshman, Ace Bailey is definitely worth watching during March Madness,” he added.

The team has struggled with a plethora of injuries, and just when rookie guard Jared McCain was starting to catch fire, he suffered a season-ending injury as well.



That’s why, with the playoffs almost out of reach, former NBA champion Ron Harper urged the team to just call it quits, shut down their veterans, and hope for the best in the NBA Draft lottery.

This speaks volumes coming from Harper, as his son, Dylan Harper, is expected to be a top-three pick in this year’s draft. Perhaps the old man wants him to play in the City of Brotherly Love.

Truth be told, it’s hard to argue with that statement after watching her score at least 20 points in five of her last six games, including two 30+ games vs. UCLA in the meantime.

The sophomore averaged north of 27 points per game and led her team to a 27-2 record and a Big Ten title. She’s still years away from entering the WNBA, so it’s crazy to think what he might accomplish in college.

The <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/duke">Duke Blue Devils</a> blew the Wake Forest Demon Deacons out of the water with a commanding 93-60 victory at Cameron Indoor Stadium. Despite the lopsided showdown between the ACC rivals, head coach Jon Scheyer sent Cooper Flagg and the rest of the players a strong message, ordering them not to rest on their laurels, as the real season is only just beginning. With March Madness approaching, the Blue Devils will only be content with one result during the NCAA tournament.



Duke holds a narrow lead over its closest pursuers, Clemson and Louisville. Both schools are 1.5 games behind the Blue Devils, as they have played two games left in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/ncaa">NCAA</a> season, while Duke has just one matchup remaining.



Regardless, Scheyer, Flagg and Duke still control their own destiny. A win during <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-basketball">college basketball’s</a> Rivalry Week against their archnemesis just south in Chapel Hill, the North Carolina Tar Heels, could be crucial for Duke’s morale heading into the most challenging time of the year: March Madness. The Tobacco Road rivalry game has been circled in red all season long, and it’s right in front of their noses now.



Ahead of such critical games, against the Tar Heels on the road, the ACC tournament and March Madness, Scheyer voiced a very clear and powerful reminder to <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/cooper-flagg">Flagg</a> and the rest of the team.

“It’s the best time of the year. It’s what you work the entire off season for,” Scheyer stated, via On3. “I think the thing about March too that I’ve learned is, you know, records don’t matter anymore. You’re not entitled to anything. Every game you play, somebody’s season has a potential to end. So, you’re playing and competing against teams that are very hungry.”

Scheyer’s message is to be received loud and clear by the Blue Devils’ locker room, especially freshman superstar Cooper Flagg, who will participate in the most crucial month of the year for the first time in his career. In case his mind isn’t purely on the NCAA tournament, Scheyer made sure to remind him this is when it counts.



<h2>Come for the Duke, you best not miss</h2>



Closing out the regular season against North Carolina will be valuable for Duke, as the players will get a taste of facing a bitter rival before stepping into do-or-die situations during the win-or-go-home battles of <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/march-madness">March Madness</a>. Scheyer is well aware of the hostile environments his team will step into, but instead of shying away or flying under the radar, the Blue Devils’ coach poked the bear.



“For us, like — that’s alright. Let’s beat people that really want to beat us, and they’re competitive,” Scheyer added. “That’s what every game the rest of the year is going to be. So for us, it’s a blessing to be in this position. It’s the best time of year for me.”

<h2>Scheyer’s message to Flagg</h2>



After an emotional Senior Night in Durham, it was freshman Flagg who stole the spotlight as fans chanted for him to stay another year at Duke. A return for his sophomore campaign seems improbable, and Scheyer made a sincere statement about the 18-year-old phenom that felt more like a farewell message.



“The talent speaks for itself. Love coaching his talent,” Scheyer said postgame, via Fox News. “But I love coaching the person. He’s all about the right stuff.”

In what could’ve been his final home game in front of the ‘Cameron Crazies’, Flagg left his mark. The forward finished the night with 28 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists. 



“I mean, this is the best place in college basketball for sure,” Flagg stated. “I’ve loved every single minute of being here. I’ve loved everybody I’ve met, everybody I’ve been around for this whole year. It’s been an amazing year.”

John Calipari’s team has been up and down this season. They play in one of the toughest conferences in the game, and there’s not much margin of error in the SEC.



That’s why Neil Paine of ESPN doesn’t seem to love their chances right now. If they want to partake in The Dance and star in March Madness, they need to take care of business now. 



<h2>Arkansas needs to beat Vanderbilt to get to the tournament, says analyst </h2>



“Coming off a pair of wins over Mizzou and Texas that revitalized its tourney chances, Arkansas came out as flat as it gets in Saturday’s loss at South Carolina, scoring just 14 points in the first half before eventually getting crushed in a landslide loss. It dropped the Razorbacks’ odds in the ESPN Analytics forecast from around 50-50 to below 40%, and knocked their SEC record to 6-10,” wrote Paine.

Their setback on Saturday has now put them against the wall. With just a 34% chance of being invited to the tournament, they will desperately have to beat Vanderbilt:



“The conference is slated to send 13 teams to the Dance in the latest version of Joe Lunardi’s Bracketology, and the Hogs went into the day ranked 12th in the SEC in NET, though they also trailed bubble rivals including UGA and Texas. Arkansas remains a borderline top-50 team by SOR or WAB with some signature wins to its name, but Saturday’s loss is one coach John Calipari probably wants back. Tuesday’s matchup with fellow bubble team Vanderbilt has big tourney implications now,” he added.

Of course, they have more than enough talent and a good coaching staff to pull this off. Then again, given their inconsistency, you never know what version of them you’ll get.

The UConn Huskies continue to be one of the teams to beat in <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-basketball" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">college basketball</a>. That’s going to be the case for as long as legendary head coach Geno Auriemma is calling the shots.



Also, with a future WNBA star like Paige Bueckers leading the way, the Huskies have become must-watch television. Even so, coach Auriemma isn’t that impressed with his superstar.



Following his team’s win over Marquette, the hard-hitting coach called out Bueckers for looking devasted after one missed free-throw, even though she already had 19 points, eight assists, and was close to winning another conference title.



<h2>Geno Auriemma says Bueckers is too dramatic</h2>



“I thought it was a little maybe it’s because it’s Oscar night it’s a little overdramatic. I thought it was a little much the reaction to missing the free throw I just turned around (and) started talking to my staff,” Auriemma said.

Notably, that’s pretty much the entire opposite from what he had said about his superstar guard in the past, as he had praised her for being a little ‘delusional’ at times:



“There’s a delusional side of Paige that I love,” Auriemma said. “‘(Paige says) I have never missed a shot; if I do miss, it’s because something happened. I have never fouled anybody in my life; the refs are always wrong.’ So there’s always this back-and-forth between me and her because I know what kids want.”

Then again, that’s just good old coach Geno Auriemma. He’s gonna tell it as it is, and he’s never going to shy away from calling out his players with some old-fashioned tough love.

No. 1 Auburn is the top team in all of basketball for a reason. And if someone had any doubts about that, they just made a pretty big statement in their win over the No. 17 Kentucky Wildcats.



Johni Broome and company routed the Wildcats 94-78. It was the first Tigers win at Rupp in almost four decades, and it headlined some of the issues Mark Pope’s team has had to deal with all year long.



That’s why, on top of tipping his hat to his opposition, the Wildcats’ coach had no choice but to take the blame for not getting his team ready to perform against such a good team.

“I would love to make excuses on that,” Pope said. “That ultimately falls on my shoulders. Credit goes to Auburn also. They’ve done this, you know they’re a good team. They made really hard shots tonight and their switching was a deenergizer for us and we did not respond to it well at all.”

Granted, the Tigers have one of the leading candidates for Player of the Year, and they’ve been dominant all year long. Also, the Wildcats clearly miss Jaxson Robinson, who’s going to be out for the season.

Even so, the Wildcats went just 4-of-17 from beyond the arc in the loss. They struggled with the Tigers’ physicality, and it’s not a good omen ahead of the tournament.

It’s not easy to stand out from the rest of the pack in today’s women’s <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/college-basketball" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">college basketball</a> scene. There are so many stellar talents that there shouldn’t be any clear-cut favorites.



That’s why what JuJu Watkins accomplished was so historically remarkable. The USC star sophomore dropped 30 points, five dimes, two steals, and three blocks to beat UCLA, earning Player of the Year honors from The Athletic.



She averaged a whopping 27.1 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 2.3 steals, and 1.6 blocks per game to lead her team to a 27-2 record and a Big Ten title. However, as talented as she is, her coach believes her mentality is what makes her stand out.



<h2>JuJu Watkins’ competitiveness is even bigger than her talent, says coach </h2>



“I think what JuJu brings to the table is just a fierce competitiveness, a focus on winning and not on noise, and an ability to look inward and galvanize a group to do the same,” USC coach Lindsay Gottlieb told The Athletic. “The focus on winning and that sort of magnetic competitiveness is probably not seen or not talked about enough with her.”

Of course, one cannot overlook her impressive scoring prowess and god-given traits with the basketball, so Coach Gottlieb also wanted to shower her with praise for that:



“Her talent jumps off the screen for people who are watching on TV — the explosiveness, the body control, the complete game,” Gottlieb added. “To me, what makes her next level is her impact on winning and her ability to rise to any moment that presents itself, no matter how big.”

It will be some time before we see Watkins take her talents to the pros, and a lot can change. For now, however, it seems like we’re witnessing a generational talent.

With that in mind, NBA analyst Bill Simmons shared his thoughts on any potential destination for him. When thinking about a potential duo with Victor Wembanyama, he claimed that it would be ‘the dream.’

With Wembanyama’s season-ending injury, there’s a small, albeit existent, chance that he will end up teaming up with <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/cooper-flagg">Flagg</a> if the Spurs manage to win the NBA Draft lottery.



<h2>Bill Simmons wants Cooper Flagg to land on a good team</h2>



“Well, I don’t want him to go to a bad team where we had this NBA infection that we’ve had for 50, 60 years where we take these great, talented players and just stick them in bad situations. Like what happened with LeBron in Cleveland the first couple years. He was on the worst possible team. And he turned out great for him, but you just lose a couple years,” Simmons said. “The best case scenario is what happened with (Larry) Bird.”

Of course, landing on a good team is unlikely for the first-overall pick. Perhaps only the Philadelphia 76ers or the aforementioned Spurs might fit the bill. Otherwise, he’s likely going to a struggling and rebuilding franchise.
