The Toronto Blue Jays received a key boost as rookie pitcher Trey Yesavage is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment, signaling that help for the rotation could arrive sooner than expected. With injuries impacting the staff, his return is becoming increasingly important.

According to Spornet’s Ben Nicholson-Smith on X, Trey Yesavage slated to pitch three innings in a minor-league game for Class A Dunedin today… John Schneider estimated that Yesavage would be back in majors first followed by José Berríos then Shane Bieber.” The outing marks a critical step in his recovery process.

Toronto’s rotation has been tested early in the season, especially after Cody Ponce suffered an ACL sprain that will sideline him for an extended period. As a result, the Blue Jays have had to consider bullpen-heavy approaches, making Yesavage’s progress even more significant, particularly since John Schneider shared what Cody Ponce felt during knee injury, underscoring how tough the setback was for the staff

Yesavage’s return could stabilize the rotation

The 2024 first-round pick quickly became a key piece for Toronto. After starting 2025 in Single-A, Yesavage rose through the system and reached the majors, delivering three strong starts before earning a spot on the postseason roster. He even contributed in the World Series, highlighting his rapid development.

His return would not only reduce the need for bullpen games but also reintroduce a high-upside arm capable of impacting the rotation immediately. For a team with playoff aspirations, that stability is crucial.

Rookie status adds another layer of impact

Despite his postseason experience, Yesavage still qualifies as a rookie due to limited service time. That keeps him eligible for Rookie of the Year honors, which could provide long-term benefits for the organization if he performs at a high level upon return.
