The New York Yankees have been pretty quiet to start the MLB offseason. Everybody hoped theyâd make a run at one or two starting pitchers, and they havenât even resigned DJ LeMahieu, whoâs coming off a career year.
LeMahieu was named American League Batting Champion and was the Yankeesâ most reliable weapon, yet it seems like theyâre reluctant to meet his pretended salary of roughly $20 million per year.
Thatâs why General Manager Brian Cashman had no choice but to open up on the situation and provide a â non-encouraging â update on where the team stands regarding DJ LeMahieuâs situation.
Brian Cashman Admits Theyâve Yet To Meet DJ LeMahieuâs Financial Intentions
âWe have had discussions and our intent is there. We have good intent when it comes to DJ LeMahieu, when it comes to re-signing him, and think he has the same on his end, but free agency is very tricky when it comes to competition,â Cashman said.
âLike always, weâll come up with what the best options are, but weâre gonna exhaust his option first, which is to try to keep him here. He loves playing in New York. He loves playing for the New York Yankees. Thereâs a lot of things in our favor, but it ultimately comes down to the financial opportunity we provide compared to the financial opportunity others are providing. Thatâs the big unknown,â he concluded.
Cashman also added that the team âwill improve their starting rotation if they canâ. Yet, they havenât made a run at any of the starting pitchers that entered free agency this season or resigned Masahiro Tanaka.
Itâs still pretty early to tell but it seems like the Yankees are reluctant to keep spending. Thatâs understandable given the context of the pandemic, but itâll only make it tougher for them to put their World Series drought to an end.
