The New York Mets currently sit second in the NL East with a 34–22 record, trailing only the Phillies. While they’ve been as dominant as possible, they continue to struggle in a key area: hitting with runners in scoring position.
Right now, the Mets rank fourth-worst in MLB in batting average with RISP, hitting just .211 — below the Rangers (.210) and above the Rockies (.212). The league-worst in that category is the White Sox, sitting at .206.
Perhaps more concerning is that Juan Soto has the lowest RISP average in the league at .130 — a shocking drop-off for a player who was highly productive with the Yankees last season. Right behind him is the Mets’ own Mark Vientos, who is batting .146 in those situations.
Vientos Speaks on RISP Struggles
Despite being part of the issue, Vientos recently downplayed the concern. He acknowledged the low averages but suggested the criticism may be overblown and that the team is still in a strong position.

Mark Vientos #27 of the New York Mets runs the bases after hitting a grand-slam home run to take a 6-0 lead against the Los Angeles Dodgers in the second inning during Game Two of the Championship Series at Dodger Stadium on October 14, 2024 in Los Angeles, California.
“If this is us struggling, and we’re winning games, imagine when we’re not,” Vientos said about the team struggles with RISP this year. “I don’t think the whole season is going to be like this.”

Mets Are Winning, But Not Hitting
Despite having more than 30 wins, the Mets don’t rank among the top teams in batting average. They currently sit 18th in MLB with a .245 average. In contrast, the division-leading Phillies rank fourth at .262.
