The uncertainty surrounding Vladimir Guerrero Jr.’s future with the Toronto Blue Jays has taken an encouraging turn, with team president Mark Shapiro expressing confidence that the organization will secure a contract extension with the Dominican star.
Despite rumors suggesting Guerrero Jr. could explore free agency next year, Shapiro has made it clear that the Blue Jays are committed to securing the talented player’s long-term future.
This statement comes at a crucial time, as Guerrero is entering the final year of his contract, adding urgency to reach an agreement before the season begins. The prospect of Guerrero remaining in Toronto and becoming a franchise icon has generated excitement among fans and the team’s front office alike.
Guerrero’s contract situation has been the subject of widespread speculation, but Shapiro’s recent statements have injected optimism into the conversation. According to Keegan Matheson of MLB.com, Shapiro strongly believes in the possibility of extending Guerrero’s contract.

Shapiro also addressed Guerrero’s importance to the Blue Jays’ future, highlighting his impact both on and off the field. “There are players who have magnetic personalities, like Vlad, who amplify winning and can really help, but fans don’t come to see great players on losing teams. We need to win to have fans come in the largest number possible. Vlad is a part of helping us win, and he’s a player that has a chance to be very special for a generation of Blue Jays fans,” Shapiro explained.
Shapiro’s vision goes beyond a simple contract; he aims to build a legacy around Guerrero. “There just aren’t many players anymore who are signed, developed, born in the country (of Canada), and play their whole career in one place, in one uniform. I call those guys legacy players… Those are players that, for me, defined what it meant to be a baseball fan. That’s the fabric of why I’m in the game today. This is a guy who has the chance to do that here.”
