“I think we’re going to sign him,” Shapiro said. I think we’re going to extend him. The reason I feel that way is because we have such a clear alignment on the desired outcome.”

Shapiro also addressed Guerrero’s importance to the Blue Jays’ future, highlighting his impact both on and off the field. There are players who have magnetic personalities, like Vlad, who amplify winning and can really help, but fans don’t come to see great players on losing teams. We need to win to have fans come in the largest number possible. Vlad is a part of helping us win, and he’s a player that has a chance to be very special for a generation of Blue Jays fans,” Shapiro explained.

Shapiro’s vision goes beyond a simple contract; he aims to build a legacy around Guerrero. “There just aren’t many players anymore who are signed, developed, born in the country (of Canada), and play their whole career in one place, in one uniform. I call those guys legacy players… Those are players that, for me, defined what it meant to be a baseball fan. That’s the fabric of why I’m in the game today. This is a guy who has the chance to do that here.”

Guerrero: Expectations and Realities

The idea of Guerrero spending his entire career in Toronto resonates deeply with fans, who see him as a player capable of defining an era. The possibility of Guerrero becoming a symbol of the franchise, similar to the great players who have shaped baseball history, is a goal the Blue Jays are determined to achieve
