Joc Pederson has been vocal about jumping on the hype surrounding the “torpedo bats,” which the New York Yankees have showcased as highly effective for hitting home runs and enhancing batting power. But Pederson isn’t the only Texas Rangers player eager to try them—several of his teammates are also ready to make the switch.
According to Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News, Pederson recently confirmed that he plans to use the Yankees’ torpedo bats as soon as possible. However, in his most recent game, he did not use the bat and managed only a .077 batting average in the Rangers’ 14–3 loss to the Reds.
Some of Pederson’s teammates have also expressed interest in testing the torpedo bats before implementing them in an official MLB game. Jake Burger, for instance, has struggled offensively since joining the Rangers, posting just a .167 batting average with three RBIs and two hits in four games.
Another player looking to experiment with the Yankees’ torpedo bats is Josh Smith. Although he hasn’t contributed much so far this season, Smith had a .258 batting average in 2024, the best mark of his four-year MLB career.

A Strong Start to the Season for the Rangers
Despite the enthusiasm for the Yankees’ torpedo bats, the Rangers have started the season on solid ground with three wins and two losses. The one concern, even after just five games, is Pederson’s lack of production as the team’s designated hitter.

Pederson is projected to make 467 plate appearances this season, with an estimated 61 runs, 102 hits, 20 home runs, and a .257 batting average. Those numbers could see a significant boost if he adapts well to the torpedo bat. Notably, in 2024, Pederson recorded the best batting average of his career—.275—without using the torpedo.
