The Pittsburgh Pirates have not had the best start to the 2025 MLB season, posting a 1-4 record in their first five games. With several underwhelming performances, and before facing Tampa Bay Rays, the Pittsburgh franchise has made a final decision regarding one of the most scrutinized players: David Bednar.

Ahead of tonight’s game against the Rays, the Pirates have made some significant moves. Right-handed pitcher Thomas Harrington was added, and Pittsburgh designated catcher Jason Delay for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster. The most surprising move, however, was the one involving Bednar.

The Pirates’ final decision is to option right-handed pitcher David Bednar to Triple-A Indianapolis to make room on the active 26-man roster. The move is surprising, as it means sending one of their bullpen’s key pieces to the minors after struggling in the first few games.

David Bednar’s stats with the Pirates

David Bednar came to the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2021 and quickly established himself as a key reliever. In his first season he posted a 2.23 ERA in 61 appearances, and in 2022 he was selected to the All-Star Game after totaling 15 saves. In 2023 he led the National League in saves, establishing himself as the team’s closer.

However, in 2024 his performance dropped, with an effectiveness of 6.32, which led to his removal from the closer’s role in August. Despite the difficulties, he began the 2025 season by securing his first save and had sought to regain his best level.

David Bednar’s contract with the Pirates

David Bednar remains under contract with the Pittsburgh Pirates for the 2025 season, though his long-term future is uncertain. He still has years of team control before reaching free agency, giving the Pirates flexibility to keep him or consider a potential trade if his performance does not improve. After a challenging 2024 season in which he lost the closer role, Bednar is looking to regain his best form and prove his value to the team.
