MLB Rumors: NY Mets owner Steve Cohen reportedly pushes to re-sign All-Star player Pete Alonso

The New York Mets are making a concerted effort to strengthen their roster. Despite several options available on the market, reports indicate that the team has prioritized bringing back a former player for the 2025 MLB season.

New York Mets owner Steve Cohen reignited speculation over Pete Alonso‘s future after reportedly having a second conversation with the slugger regarding a potential deal for the 2025 MLB season. The discussion follows a weekend report that Alonso rejected an initial offer, fueling ongoing trade rumors.

Cohen previously revealed that no formal offer was made, but with Alonso set to hit free agency after the upcoming season, the Mets are exploring ways to keep him in Queens. According to reports, the first proposal—valued at $70 million over three years—was turned down, and Alonso is now awaiting a revised offer.

Jon Heyman of The New York Post reported that Cohen and Alonso’s representatives have met again in an effort to reach common ground. “No more than 48 hours after publicly lamenting the seemingly endless saga (and helping quell the boos after baseball president David Stearns told fans how wonderful their prospects are), Cohen was back in conversation with Alonso’s camp,Heyman wrote.

With the information that Heyman shared about the Mets and Alonso, a couple of hours after Alonso publicly addressed his rejection of the team’s offers, the renewed discussions suggest both sides are exploring ways to keep the star first baseman in Queens.

Despite the lack of concrete information, speculation runs rampant. Heyman suggests Alonso is eager to remain in Queens, stating, “From my drama-free distance, it feels like Alonso desperately hopes to return while the Mets could go either way.” This uncertainty fuels the growing anticipation surrounding Alonso’s future with the team. Other clubs are undoubtedly monitoring the situation, ready to pounce should contract talks stall.

Mets reportedly bolster bullpen with an old acquaintance

Even as the Alonso negotiations take center stage, the Mets front office isn’t standing still. They continue to explore opportunities to strengthen the roster, recently securing the return of a key bullpen piece. According to MLB Insider Anthony DiComo, right-handed reliever Ryne Stanek has agreed to a one-year deal with the Mets for the 2025 season.
