The New York Mets and the New York Yankees find themselves in precarious positions as the MLB postseason looms. Both teams are on the brink of elimination, with the Mets particularly struggling, having endured a seven-game losing streak and posting a dismal 1-8 record in August. In response to these challenges, Mets owner Steve Cohen has expressed his intentions to support his team through this difficult period.

Recently, the Mets have suffered consecutive series losses to the Milwaukee Brewers and the Cleveland Guardians, raising concerns among fans about their postseason prospects. With fewer games left to bridge the gap, their standings position is increasingly at risk.

Head coach Carlos Mendoza’s strategies have faced widespread criticism on social media. Players like Francisco Alvarez have been under scrutiny as well, despite Alvarez having made a notable comeback from Triple-A. His overall contribution during the regular season has, however, fallen short of expectations.

Recognizing the gravity of the situation, Cohen addressed the team’s struggles on his social media platform, X. “We haven’t been playing well, but I still believe in this team,” Cohen shared, conveying his continued faith in the franchise.

“I will be at Citi Field for the next three games cheering the Mets on,” Cohen declared, underscoring his commitment to the team during this trying phase, despite their promising start earlier this year.

Mets’ recent struggles: A statistical overview

The Mets’ concerning 1-8 record in August has everyone on edge, compounded by subpar statistics in their recent series against the Guardians and Brewers. In their last few games, the Mets have managed only 40 runs while conceding 53, highlighting their offensive challenges.

Across the regular season, they have suffered eight walk-off losses. If they drop the opening game of the upcoming series against the Atlanta Braves, they risk marking their longest losing streak this season.
