The New York Mets are currently battling to break out of a bad streak. While they aren’t in the worst possible situation, they sit in second place in the NL East with a 63-55 record, a bit distant from the Philadelphia Phillies, who lead the division at 69-49.
The Mets, however, may still have a small chance to steal the division title from the Phillies. This could happen if they manage to recover their offense, which has been significantly diminished by a current seven-game losing streak that included a recent sweep.
According to an analysis by Kevin Cooney of 97.5 The Fanatic, the Mets would need to win at least 29 of their next 44 games to claim the division title, while the Phillies would only need to win 22 games to secure it.
Complicated Situation for the Mets
Kevin Cooney’s analysis is easy to understand, but the difficult part is knowing if the Mets are capable of winning 29 of their next 44 games. The team has won only one game in August so far, the second game of a series against the Giants. After losing that series, they were swept by both the Guardians and the Brewers, marking a truly dismal stretch.
The Mets’ return home to begin a series against the Braves could offer some relief. Manager Carlos Mendoza recently said there is a lot of frustration in the clubhouse, but that no one said the path would be easy. The last time the Mets won a home series was from July 21-23 against the Angels.
Only Two Postseasons in Five Years
The Mets have not had an easy time over the last five years, making the MLB postseason only twice: in 2024 and 2022. In 2022, they lost the Wild Card series 2-1. Their most recent deep postseason run was in 2015 when they lost the World Series to the Royals 4-1.
