New York Mets fans are witnessing history as Pete Alonso continues to climb the franchise record books. The first baseman recently broke the team’s all-time home run record, and now the question turns to how long he will continue to play in Queens.

Alonso has shown remarkable consistency and power this season. In 119 games, he has hit 28 home runs with 96 RBIs and posted an .880 OPS. His record-breaking home runs — numbers 253 and 254 — came against the Atlanta Braves, moving him past Darryl Strawberry for the top spot in franchise history.

ā€œThere’s only one way to find out,ā€ Alonso said, according to amNewYork, adding, ā€œI have a goal to play baseball until I’m through my age 40 season. So for me, I’m going to work hard and do that. On the business side, Steve [Cohen] and David [Stearns], they gotta come through.ā€

How will Pete Alonso’s contract situation shape his Mets future?

Alonso is expected to exercise the opt-out clause in his current two-year deal this winter, following a resurgent campaign. His 2025 season performance has put him in a strong negotiating position, and the market for his services could be competitive.

Last winter, Alonso agreed to a two-year, $54 million contract with the Mets after a challenging free agency process. The thin market helped facilitate the reunion, as Alonso was coming off a .788 OPS season with 34 home runs and 88 RBIs over 162 games. This offseason, however, he could command a long-term, high-value contract that exceeds $30 million per season.

What motivates Alonso to stay with the New York Mets?

Beyond the business side of baseball, Alonso has expressed a strong connection to the team and city. ā€œI love the city of New York, I love the fan base. It’s been great,ā€ he said. ā€œBut the business is the business side if they choose to go in another direction. For me, it’s been an absolute treat and pleasure here. This group is one of the biggest reasons why I came back.ā€

What could the future hold for Alonso and the Mets?

For now, Alonso continues to contribute to the team’s playoff push while adding to his franchise records. His home run record could stand for years if he remains in Queens, and younger players like Juan Soto are also set to leave a mark in the coming seasons. Alonso acknowledged the legacy potential but remained humble: ā€œI’m really honored and humbled, and it’s really special for me.ā€
