Pete Alonso makes tough admission after Mets’ Game 3 loss in Subway Series

Unfortunately for the New York Mets, they couldn’t do much to win the Subway Series, and in Game 3, Pete Alonso found himself at the center of a painful play—one he was forced to speak about afterward.

Pete Alonso came up empty at the plate in the final game of the Subway Series between the New York Mets and Yankees, going 0-for-4 in Game 3. But what stood out even more was the tough admission he made after the game.

In the 8th inning, Alonso made a costly defensive mistake that was hard to explain—especially given that he had handled an identical play successfully in Game 2. But this time, his throw to home plate went awry.

“Yeah, I mean, I messed up… It was the same play… an identical play yesterday [Game 2]… It was a tight play at home. I just made an awful throw. That whole inning, this game, it’s on me. After that throw the momentum got out of hand, they [Yankees] had really good at-bats, yeah, this one was on me.”

It was a cool Subway Series

Despite owning the miscue—and noting he rarely messes up routine plays like that—Alonso still praised the atmosphere of the Subway Series. He said the energy at Yankee Stadium was but other MLB experiences were better.

“For me, I still think the No. 1 place was our place after we beat Philly in the DS. I think that was top-tier loudest after Francisco hit his grand slam,” Alonso said. He finished the series with just two hits in 12 at-bats.

Looking Ahead: The Next Mets-Yankees Series

The Mets and Yankees will meet again on Independence Day when the Subway Series shifts to Citi Field for the second and final regular-season matchup between the two teams. If they face off again after that, it would mark their first postseason meeting since the 2000 World Series.
