The Philadelphia Phillies are currently enjoying a strong version of Kyle Schwarber — a major boost for the team following a rough start to the season that’s now well behind them. And with one brief comment from the team’s GM, there may now be a little more clarity about Schwarber’s future.
During an interview with Devan Kaney and Ruben Amaro Jr., Phillies GM Preston Mattingly was asked about the designated hitter’s outlook and kept his response short: “Kyle [Schwarber] is a priority for us.” He didn’t elaborate further on Kaney’s question regarding Schwarber’s long-term future.
Mattingly discussed other topics during the conversation, but his quick remark about Schwarber stood out — especially considering the slugger’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season. Analysts like Jeff Passan have already suggested Schwarber is the kind of player who could command a deal worth at least $100 million.
Schwarber’s surge with the Phillies
This season, Schwarber has played a pivotal role in the Phillies’ success. With 18 home runs — keeping pace with Aaron Judge — and a .257 batting average along with 40 RBIs, he’s been a key contributor in helping the team recover from their early-season struggles.
One area of real improvement for Schwarber has been his strikeout rate. Through 53 games, he’s averaging just 0.98 strikeouts per MLB game — a notable drop compared to last season’s 1.37 average, when he finished with 197 strikeouts.

If he keeps that pace, Schwarber could end the year with 156 strikeouts or fewer across 160 games — a major improvement for a player who’s routinely topped 200 strikeouts in prior seasons with the Phillies.
