Video: Francisco Alvarez sends a loud message with first Mets home run of 2025

Francisco Alvarez’s home run was the perfect way to silence the doubters — his first moonshot of the year with the New York Mets, serving as clear proof that his hand is stronger than ever and that he’s ready to take back his role behind the plate.

Francisco Alvarez showed he’s healthier than ever with a 2-run home run in the New York Mets’ game against the Nationals, launching a 358-foot moonshot that puts the catcher in a strong position to reclaim his spot behind the plate.

The Mets‘ first two runs against the Nationals provided a much-needed boost for a team struggling at the plate during their Washington series. A return to form for Alvarez could be a significant relief for the lineup.

This wasn’t Alvarez’s first game back after recovering from a hand fracture—he also played in the opening game of the series, a narrow 4-5 loss marred by defensive errors from his Mets teammates.

The question remains: can Alvarez reclaim his role as the team’s catcher?

It’s possible, but it’s worth noting he’s now in direct competition with fellow Venezuelan Luis Torrens. Torrens, with eight MLB seasons under his belt, brings more experience to the table, although he’s only had one season in New York with the Mets.

The Mets need Alvarez back.

Last season, Alvarez contributed 39 runs in just 100 games, with his 73 hits proving valuable during the regular season. Though he fell short in some areas, his efforts helped propel the team to the postseason, where he made his second appearance with the Mets and played in 13 games.
