Video: Royals’ Michael Massey and Maikel Garcia pull off jaw-dropping double play to silence Astros

Looking to score and gain some breathing room in the game, the Houston Astros were denied by a sensational double play executed by the Kansas City Royals duo of Michael Massey and Maikel Garcia – a defensive gem rarely seen in MLB.

The Kansas City Royals continue to showcase a defensive prowess few MLB teams can match this year. Despite not boasting the league’s best record, they recently highlighted their formidable defense with Michael Massey and Maikel Garcia teaming up to thwart the Houston Astros‘ offensive efforts.

When the Royals pulled off that pivotal double play, they were comfortably ahead of the Astros 7-0 before the fifth inning. This solid lead meant they weren’t giving the Astros any room to breathe, especially in that bases-loaded situation where Houston was desperately trying to get on the board but couldn’t.

The Royals entered the first game of their series against the Astros with a 24-18 record, having just snapped a seven-game winning streak (from May 3rd to May 9th) with two consecutive losses to the Red Sox.

Massey and Garcia Showing Promise

While Massey is currently batting .212 this MLB season, a dip in production compared to his .273 average and eight home runs through 37 games at this point last year (he has just one homer heading into the Astros game), his defensive contributions remain significant.

Garcia, on the other hand, is having a strong start, hitting .306 with four home runs in his 41 games with the Royals this season. At this pace, he’s on track to surpass his 2024 totals of seven home runs, as well as potentially exceeding his RBI, runs, and hits.

Royals Eyeing More Success

So far in the AL Central, the Royals hold a 24-18 record, placing them third behind the Guardians and Tigers, and this is before the conclusion of their recent game against the Astros. Notably, the Royals have secured three wins out of four road games in May. Following their series in Houston, their next road trips will be against the Giants and the Twins, spanning from May 19th to May 25th.
