Walker Buehler was honest after the Red Sox dropped the series opener to the New York Yankees. The right-hander lasted just two innings, allowing seven hits and five earned runs in a shaky outing. “I’ve been ***** embarrassing for us,” he said bluntly postgame.
It was a rough stage for Buehler to stumble on, especially given the stakes of the Red Sox vs. Yankees rivalry. “This organization put a lot of faith in me this offseason,” he added, clearly frustrated. “For it to go the way that it did is super disappointing.”
Despite the ugly results, Buehler says he’s physically fine—he just hasn’t won a game since April. “After the past two, three weeks of prep and how I’m feeling… for it to happen that way, just—it *****,” he admitted. Now 4–4 on the year, he’s searching for answers.
How bad has Buehler’s season been so far?
Walker Buehler has been tough on himself for a reason—his 2025 MLB season has been anything but smooth. He holds a 4–4 record and hasn’t earned a win since April 26. Following his latest loss to the Yankees, Buehler is now on a three-game losing streak dating back to May 25 against the Orioles, with another loss to the Braves to close out the month.
Among the Red Sox starting rotation, Buehler owns the third-highest ERA at 5.18. Only Tanner Houck (8.04) and Lucas Giolito (6.42) rank worse. On the bright side, Buehler is second among Red Sox starters in strikeouts with 40+, though still far behind Garrett Crochet’s dominant 101 Ks.
Cora weighs in on rough loss to Yankees
Manager Alex Cora didn’t single out Buehler directly but addressed the shaky start overall. “It’s hard to play this way,” he said of the early innings, while also noting the bullpen struggled to stabilize the game. Still, he remained optimistic about the rest of the series.

“Obviously, the bullpen is taxed. What [Cooper Criswell] did today after pitching two days ago, it’s hard to do,” Cora said. “We’ve just got to get better. We have to pitch. We trust these guys. We just have to improve.”
He added, “It’ll be great for us to have our starters go deeper in this series, giving us six at least every night, and if we can do that, we’re going to be OK,” following the Red Sox’s 9–6 loss at Yankee Stadium.
