The New York Yankees watched Oswaldo Cabrera go down with what was supposed to be a routine play—but it ended in a painful ankle injury that could keep him out for a while.
“Oswaldo Cabrera is one of the nicest guys you could possibly cover as a reporter. He is always exuberant about baseball and life. Really hope he’s not as seriously injured as it looks,” wrote The Athletic’s Chris Kirschner following the incident.
Many fans shared their support and concern for the Yankees utility man. “Prayers up for the easiest Yankee to root for—no matter where or how he’s playing, he hustles and plays with a smile,” wrote fan Conor Maguire on social media.
Yankees teammates react to Cabrera’s injury
Outfielder Trent Grisham spoke with YES Network and praised Cabrera: “He shows up every day with the right attitude, plays the game hard, and he’s the best person off the field.” Grisham also admitted it was tough to stay focused after witnessing the injury.

Manager Aaron Boone echoed the sentiment, calling Cabrera “the best of people you are going to come across.” And Aaron Judge revealed a small but telling moment: “He called me over and asked, ‘Did I score?’ Kinda shows you the type of guy he is.”
Concerns about the Yankees’ infield depth
While many were focused on Cabrera’s well-being, others were already raising questions about the Yankees’ infield going forward. With the Venezuelan likely out for some time, third base could become a problem spot.
“A third baseman is a non-negotiable need for the Yankees now. Rolling with DJ/Peraza/Jorbit/Pablo isn’t gonna cut it, and there are no real prospects in the picture for this season either,” wrote Max Mannis on X.
