The Los Angeles Lakers and the Golden State Warriors faced off Saturday night in the California Classic Summer NBA League, a showcase typically reserved for the rising stars of each franchise. Heading into the game, fans fully expected to see Bronny James suit up for the Lakers — but his surprising absence left many disappointed.
Bronny James, the rookie guard and son of LeBron James, was selected 55th overall by the Lakers in the 2024 NBA Draft. He appeared in 27 games during his rookie season, splitting time between the Lakers and their G League affiliate, the South Bay Lakers.
In 18 G League appearances, including regular-season contests and the Tip-Off Tournament, James averaged an impressive 18.6 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 4.8 assists per game. The former USC standout showed flashes of high-level potential and entered Summer League play looking to build on that foundation heading into his sophomore season.
As they have in recent years, the Lakers are using the California Classic to assess young talent before transitioning to the Las Vegas Summer League. Their opening matchup against the Warriors, however, was notable for who didn’t take the floor. According to Matthew Peralta of Lakers Nation, James was held out of the Summer League opener, writing on X: “Doesn’t look like Bronny’s suiting up today.”
Fans react to Bronny James’ absence
News of James’ absence quickly spread across social media, sparking a flurry of reactions from both Lakers and Warriors fans. Many expressed confusion and disappointment, as they had tuned in specifically to watch the much-anticipated debut of LeBron’s son in a Lakers uniform.
