Year after year, several experts from ESPN gather to put together their ranking for the upcoming NBA season. Needless to say, this is always a subject of controversy as some of the decisions they make are kind of questionable, to say the least.

Insiders, experts, and people around the league always tend to buy into narratives and often overhype some guys over others. Either because of their popularity, the market they play in, or how they fared in the playoffs, it’s just how it goes every year.

That’s why San Antonio Spurs star DeMar DeRozan had to step up and call out ESPN for their terrible ranking this season, as they ranked him as the 82nd best player in the league behind other players like TJ Warren orTyler Herro.

Most players will tell you that they don’t mind what other people say about them but that’s simply not true. Even if they manage to shut down the outside noise, they just can’t hide from these narratives in the social media era.

And even though DeMar DeRozan has already peaked and didn’t live up to the expectations people had on him, he’s still coming off averaging 22.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 5.6 assists per game on 53% shooting.

There’s just no reason to think that John Wall (who hasn’t played in two years), Lonzo Ball (who averaged 11.8 points per game), Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, OG Anunoby, or Davis Bertans, to name a few, should be ranked ahead of DeMar.

At the end of the day, these rankings are mostly subjective and should be taken with a grain of salt, but it’s still crazy to think that people who talk sports for a living could disrespect a veteran and multiple-time All-Star like this.
