Draymond Green opens up about the role he regrets not taking outside Golden State in the NBA

Draymond Green has been one of the key figures for the Golden State Warriors over the past decade and a cornerstone of the franchise’s four NBA titles since 2015. But beyond his contributions on the court, the forward revealed he wishes he had embraced another role tied to the game.

“I should’ve been the Players association president… I could’ve helped a lot,” Green shared in a post on his official Threads account. “The league is great, it’s been great to all of us. Amazing partnership amongst players, staff, front office, ownership, and Fans that make the well oiled machine soar. And rightfully so, but it’s baffling to me how little players know about this business and how it affects them and ways most don’t understand.”

The Warriors star focused his message on how many NBA players make career decisions that, in hindsight, prove to be misguided. “I sit here and watch so many players overplay the market and not understand what they are up against with the new rules,” he added.

“Which leads me to trying to understand the unstaggering percentage of guys that has no idea of THE BUSINESS they are a part of,” continued the four-time NBA champion. “I as a ‘VET’ in this league watch players mismanage their careers and before they know it, look back like (expletive), where to next?”

Draymond went on to explain how, based on his experience and what he’s learned over the years, he believes he could offer a different take that would benefit his fellow players. “I have what I think is an extremely unique perspective on this. I am obviously a player, a former amazing general manager is one of my close friends. I am very close with previous owners and current ones. I was introduced to the business at 16,” he said.

Green’s comments came after NBA free agency week, a time when several players chose their next destination for the upcoming season. Regarding that process, the Warriors forward said: “Quite frankly it never really started,” pointing to the “New CBA” and the “second apron” (related to the salary cap) as factors behind the slow market.

Toward the end of his message, Draymond made an important clarification. “And also before yall run and make this about JK, it isn’t,” he said, referring to his Golden State teammate Jonathan Kuminga, who has been the subject of recent trade speculation. “He’s 22 and will be great and make a bunch of money, so this ain’t got nothing to do with him.”
