One key trait an MVP must demonstrate on the court is leadership. While the reigning MVP, Nikola Jokic, isn’t known for vocal outbursts, his determination has propelled his team to success. In the case of Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, one of the frontrunners for this season’s MVP, he showcased that leadership ahead of the Oklahoma City Thunder’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers, which featured LeBron James in the starting five.

In contrast to earlier matchups, the Lakers couldn’t find a way to claw their way back into the game and ultimately suffered a loss. This setback was also partly due to the temporary absence of Luka Doncic, who was ejected in the fourth quarter.

Despite the circumstances, the Thunder played with a renewed energy on the court, underscoring why they were the first team in the Western Conference to secure a playoff spot. That energy was fueled by a pre-game message from Gilgeous-Alexander, who had a clear focus heading into the contest against the Lakers.

Looking to bounce back from their previous struggles, the Thunder star took a serious tone with his teammates in the locker room on Tuesday night. He made it clear that he didn’t want to see them suffer another defeat in their upcoming challenges.

“You get beat up in the hood, and you spin back the next day. You can’t get beat up again. It’s not an option,” Gilgeous-Alexander said to his teammates, as reported by Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix. After the game, he added, “Tonight was going to be a fight. We had to, I guess you could say, get our lick back.”

I expect Luka to receive cheers and a standing ovation when he returns to Dallas tomorrow night,” LeBron said following the Lakers‘ tough loss to the Thunder. “We’ll do whatever it takes to support him, and we’d love to secure a win for him.”

Doncic’s highly anticipated return to Dallas

After seven seasons with the Mavericks, Doncic was traded to the Lakers in one of the most significant moves in NBA history. Now, donning a new jersey, he prepares to face his former team in Dallas, the place where his NBA journey began.
