Stephen Curry knows Kevon Looney’s departure will be a tough one for the Golden State Warriors. Looney was a reliable presence who understood his role and made major contributions throughout his time with the team. Now, the franchise appears to have its sights set on a veteran replacement.
One name that’s been floating around for some time is now gaining real traction: 39-year-old Al Horford is being linked to Golden State as a possible center option for next season, according to a report from The Stein Line.
“All signs, for the record, continue to point to Al Horford landing with Golden State … eventually. Sunday will be the first day of the 2025–26 salary cap year that NBA teams can make most free agent signings and trades official,” the report reads.
Three Options for the Veteran
While adding a seasoned big man like Horford would benefit Curry and the rest of the Warriors roster, it’s worth noting that the Warriors aren’t the only team on his radar. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Horford is also considering the Lakers — and possibly retirement.

Al Horford #42 of the Boston Celtics runs down court during the first quarter against the Indiana Pacers in Game One of the Eastern Conference Finals at TD Garden on May 21, 2024.
“He is 39 years old. He just finished season 18. I’m told it would be a surprise if he makes a final decision by this weekend. He certainly has earned the right to make a decision at his own time,” Charania said regarding Horford’s upcoming choice.
Why the Warriors Are Interested in Horford
Despite being limited to 60 games last season and averaging 9.0 points, Horford still offers the kind of all-around skill set the Warriors value — not just shooting, but also passing and defense. Golden State appears to be looking for a steady veteran who can contribute on multiple fronts.
