Countless NBA fans claim that Lakersâ starLeBron James should be named the leagueâs MVP every year, so whenever another player gets the nod, thereâs always a lot of back-and-forth and controversies. This time, however, it was The King the one who spoke up.
Itâs clear that James has been the more consistent and impactful NBA player for almost two decades. Then again, that doesnât necessarily translate to being the Most Valuable Player of the season.
Giannis Antetokounmpo beat LeBron James for this yearâs MVP award and itwasnât even close. The 17-year veteran finished with just 16 votes out of 101 and was clearly disgusted about it, even taking it to his Twitter account to voice his anger.
LeBron James Is Pissed Off About MVP Snub
â16 out of 101. Ok cool! I got yâall,â James tweeted. Then, he acknowledged that this year voting pissed him off and claim that he doesnât understand the voting scale and that he shouldâve been the MVP and DPOY in 2013.
âIt pissed me off. Thatâs my true answer. It pissed me off cuz out of 101 votes, I got 16 first-place votes. Not saying the winner wasnât deserving, but it pissed me off.The voting scale is a little weird to me sometimes. I mean if you take 2012 â if you just stick with me here â 2012-13, I had a chance to be Defensive Player of the Year and also MVP on the same season. And that year Marc Gasol was rewarded as Defensive Player of the Year. But he made second-team All-Defense.Itâs a weird thing sometimes. I donât know how much we are really watching the game of basketball or weâre just in the. narration mode â the narrative,â LeBron said.
Was LeBron James Robbed Of The MVP?
LeBron James had an impressive season from start to finish. Narrative-wise, he should have been this yearâs MVP. He led the Lakers back to the playoffs, led the league in assists per game, and endured Kobe Bryantâs loss. Thatâs cool and worthy of consideration.
Then again, Giannis Antetokounmpo posted unprecedented efficiency on the team with the best record in the league. He led the league in multiple defensive and offensive stats and didnât even need to crack the 38-minutes per game mark.
The problem with the MVP award is the lack ofstandard criteria. Should we vote for the best player on the best team? Should we vote for the player his team needs the most even if itâs not a good team at all? What does âmost valuableâ even mean?
