One of the biggest names that stirred up headlines during the trade window last February was Golden State Warriors star Jimmy Butler. His departure from the Miami Heat was controversial, and some fans voiced their frustrations, especially after he missed the final month of the season due to a suspension and an injury recovery.
Given the drama surrounding his exit, the NBA world was eagerly anticipating Butler’s return to where it all began in Miami. The buildup started even before the game tipped off, with a tribute video recognizing Butler’s significant contributions during his time with the Heat, helping lead the team to success.
However, the game didn’t go in Butler’s favor. Despite the warm reception, his former teammate, Bam Adebayo, had a stellar performance, and the Heat secured the win. After the loss, Butler addressed the media and shared his thoughts on the tribute video.
“The video was nice, but I wouldn’t say there were a lot of emotions,” Butler said. “I continue to say that I’m very grateful, and I’m not spiteful toward anybody.” Butler kept his emotions in check when reflecting on facing his old team, emphasizing that the game’s outcome and how it impacts the Warriors’ playoff aspirations were his primary focus.

Butler’s teammate reflects on Heat fan base
While Jimmy Butler seemed unfazed by the emotional atmosphere surrounding his return to Miami, one of his Golden State Warriors teammates, Draymond Green, took note of the fans’ strong affection. Green spoke to the media, expressing surprise at the palpable excitement in the stands for Butler’s return.

“The fans were hype. You hardly ever see all the seats filled in Miami at the start of the game, at halftime. Every seat was filled,” Green said, noting the Heat fan base’s desire to see their former star back in action following a dramatic departure in February.
Despite the pregame tribute video and the warm reception from the crowd, Green commented on how Butler stayed focused during the game. “He was fine, he was into the game, he didn’t make it about himself. Unfortunately, we didn’t get the win for him, though I think he handled it well,” Green added.

Similar to Butler’s own take on his return to Miami, former teammate Bam Adebayo was clear about his focus on the game and the team’s priorities, as they got a win after plenty of matches without one.
“Like I said, I’m just glad we got the win. I don’t care about who we were playing against,” Adebayo said. His words reflected a similar sentiment to Butler’s, while the emotional backstory of his departure may have affected some, Adebayo’s main concern was the victory.
