Kevin Durant is nearly set for his new chapter with the Houston Rockets ahead of the 2025–26 NBA season—and one detail that’s already caught fans’ attention is his jersey number. He’ll be wearing a number he’s used once before in his career.
This time, it won’t be the familiar No. 35 he wore for most of his career—including his most recent stint with the Phoenix Suns. Instead, Durant will be suiting up in No. 7, the same number he wore during his time with the Brooklyn Nets from 2020 to 2023.
Last season, Cam Whitmore was the one wearing No. 7 in Houston. But with Whitmore now in Washington, the number is officially available—and Durant will take it for at least one year with the Rockets.
How many Rockets players have worn No. 7?
So far, 17 players have worn No. 7 in franchise history, now including Durant. Notable names include Carmelo Anthony, Kyle Lowry, and Carl Herrera, who helped Houston win back-to-back championships in 1994 and 1995. It’s a number that’s been worn by both stars and short-term contributors alike.

During his run in Brooklyn with No. 7, Durant averaged 28.8 points per game across two and a half seasons. However, injuries limited his availability—he never played more than 55 games in a single year during his time with the Nets.
Building a winning streak in Houston
With Durant now in the fold, the Rockets are hoping to build some momentum and consistency—at least enough to become a regular playoff team. Last NBA season, Houston finally ended a four-year playoff drought but was knocked out in the first round by the Golden State Warriors.
