The San Francisco 49ers can’t escape drama. A couple of years ago, it was Deebo Samuel, last year, it was Brandon Aiyuk. Now, it’s another Brock Purdy weapon dealing with an ‘extend me or trade me‘ case. The thing is, it seems the team hasn’t done anything yet, and it’s not something they can afford.
Jauan Jennings is scheduled to make $7.5 million this season. However, he is coming off a career-year and the 49ers are thin on the receiving department, therefore, you’d think the team would be looking to get a deal done. Adam Schefter from ESPN reports that little progress has been made, even if Jennings approached the 49ers with his request.
Jennings signed a $15.39 million, two-year extension last season. While he is not expected to hold out, he has some leverage. The wideouts are a slim unit on the 49ers, and Jennings is the best receiver available.
Jennings is an underrated baller
Brandon Aiyuk is still recovering from a knee injury. Aiyuk is poised to be the first option, but he would still need to come back into rhythm. This means that, even if he avoids the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, it’s not like he’ll be back like he never left. He needs time to readapt. Jennings is the best receiver available for Brock Purdy.

Jauan Jennings #15 of the San Francisco 49ers is ejected for fighting during the first half of the NFL game at State Farm Stadium on January 05, 2025 in Glendale, Arizona.
Jennings, on the other hand, is coming off a career-year where he posted 77 receptions, 975 receiving yards, 6 touchdowns and only one drop. He also finished 10th in the NFL for yards per route run (2.51). Not to mention, his head coach Kyle Shanahan loves Jennings’ ability to block.

Jennings is jumping on that Jonnu Smith trend
What Jennings is doing is pretty much the same tight end Jonnu Smith did with the Dolphins. Smith asked Miami for a new deal, and when expectations didn’t meet, he demanded a trade.
Jennings is doing the same, and you can bet there is a team willing to give him the money he’s demanding. Most teams will overpay for a guy who can make plays, contested catches and has the ability to block downfield.
