It’s been a long wait, but the chance of redemption is drawing nearer for Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes. Following a disappointing ending to their last campaign, the 2025 NFL season will give the Kansas City Chiefs an opportunity to bounce back.

With NFL training camps right around the corner, Reid will soon know which players will go to battle with him when the regular season gets underway. However, he’s also finding out there are some players he won’t be able to count on.

On Wednesday, the NFL’s transaction wire showed that the Chiefs have waived wide receiver Justyn Ross. While this leaves Mahomes without a possible weapon, it also makes many wonder what’s next for the Clemson product.

Justyn Ross reportedly requested Chiefs release, WR expected to draw interest

Ross, 25, joined the Chiefs as an undrafted free agent in 2022 and went on to stay around the team until this offseason. According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, it was the wideout himself who requested to be cut last week.

Justyn Ross asked for his release last week and the Chiefs granted it today, I’m told,” wrote Pelissero on X (formerly known as Twitter), suggesting that Ross might draw interest from other NFL teams in the open market. “After four seasons in Kansas City, the onetime Clemson star gets a fresh start and should have interest.”

A new possibility both for Ross and Chiefs

Ross spent much of his time in Kansas City with the Chiefs’ practice squad. And even though this year he once again had a chance to compete for an active roster spot, Mahomes and Reid will now definitely operate in offense without him.

Ross’ release creates a couple of intriguing scenarios. Not only does it allow him to try and prove his worth elsewhere, but it also leaves an open spot on the Chiefs’ 90-man offseason roster. Both are interesting situations to watch.
