You know what they say: the rich get richer. That’s what we all thought when the New England Patriots were able to sign Cam Newton to make up for the tough loss of Tom Brady at the hands of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Newton has struggled with injuries over the past couple of years and the Carolina Panthers gave up on him to make room for Teddy Bridgewater. But now that he was back at full strength, most people assumedhe was going to be under center for the Pats. Well, not so fast.
According to The Providence Journal, the former MVP did have some first-team touches and led some drills in the Patriots’ first fullpractice, but also did Bryan Hoyer and sophomore quarterback Jarrett Stidham:
“On Monday, the Patriots put on pads for the first time this year and the media was there for 90-minute practice. The emphasis on this day was clear as the Pats focused on the run game, run blocking and run defense. In the much-anticipated quarterback competition, the Patriots coaching staff rotated in Brian Hoyer, Jarrett Stidham and Cam Newton. There was no clear first-team quarterback. For example, Hoyer started one drill followed by Stidham and Newton,” read the report.
Same Old Cam Newton
Cam kept a low profile on social media before signing with the Patriots. He promised to be at his best and shared some footage of him working out to prove that he was fully healthy and worthy of a roster spot.
Now that he’s landed a contract, Cam Newton is back at his old self, for better or worse. When healthy, there’s no doubt that he’s one of the best dual-threat quarterbacks in the NFL. However, that kind of overconfidence can also backfire, especially if he doesn’t start taking care of his body.

Supercam has all it takes to lead the Patriots back to contention and Bill Belichick sure knows how to make the most of the talents other teams gave up on. But, for now, it seems like he’s going to earn his stripes in Foxborough like everybody else.
