Football: the ultimate passion, the greatest sport in the world, the game that makes millions of people put their lives on pause for a couple of hours as they enjoy one of the finest spectacles on the planet.

And there's no bigger stage in football than the Super Bowl. For the past 54 years, thousands of players have dreamed of lifting that precious Vince Lombardi trophy, yet just a handful of them has been able to fulfill that goal.

It's not a secret - nor a racial issue either - that, throughout history, most of the quarterbacks to thrive in the NFL have been white, while black players often occupy the rest of the spots on the court.

Needless to say, there have been countless exceptions to that rule, such as Michael Vick, Cam Newton, Donovan McNabb, and big etcetera. Then again, for some reason, they haven't found much success in the playoffs.

That has led a lot of people to wonder just how many African American quarterbacks have ever won the Super Bowl? The answer, as you may imagine by now, it's not too many, but we'll get into that in a while.

How Many Black Quarterbacks Have Played In The Super Bowl?

Thus far, just seven African American quarterbacks have made it to the Super Bowl:

+ Doug Williams (Washington Redskins, 1988)
+ Steve McNair (Tennessee Titans, 2000)
+ Donovan McNabb (Philadelphia Eagles, 2005)
+ Colin Kaepernick (San Francisco 49ers, 2013)
+ Russell Wilson (Seattle Seahawks, 2014, 2015)
+ Cam Newton (Carolina Panthers, 2016)
+ Patrick Mahomes (Kansas City Chiefs, 2019, 2020)

How Many Black Quarterbacks Have Won The Super Bowl?

Crazy as it may seem, just three African American quarterbacks have been able to win the Super Bowl thus far: Doug Williams in 1988 with the Washington Redskins on Super Bowl XXII, Russell Wilson in 2014 with the Seattle Seahawks on Super Bowl XLVIII, and Patrick Mahomes (who's mixed-race) in 2019 with the Kansas City Chiefs on Super Bowl LIV. Hopefully, that trend will change pretty soon.
