The Kansas City Chiefs‘ early elimination from playoff contention is giving them plenty of time to get ready for 2026, though facing much of their preparation with <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/patrick-mahomes">Patrick Mahomes</a> still recovering from a torn ACL and LCL.



Another situation to watch in Kansas City is <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl/chiefs-officially-secure-te-for-2026-with-travis-kelce-still-contemplating-retirement">Travis Kelce’s potential retirement, which is why the Chiefs already secured a tight end for 2026</a>. But while the team made a move in that position, it has yet to take action at quarterback.



The Chiefs recently missed out on the possibility of bringing back a familiar face in <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/bailey-zappe">Bailey Zappe</a>, who was signed to a reserve/future contract by the New York Jets on Monday.



Zappe, drafted by the New England Patriots as a fourth-round pick in 2022, spent time with the Chiefs’ practice squad in 2024 and 2025, leaving the scout team for the Cleveland Browns both years.

Since Mahomes’ recovery could take up to nine months, the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/kansas-city-chiefs">Chiefs</a> might need healthy quarterbacks to work with in training camp and preseason. Bringing Zappe back would have made sense, but he’ll be working for another AFC team instead.

Shane Buechele could’ve provided more depth as well, but the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl/chiefs-officially-part-ways-with-a-quarterback-in-2026-before-patrick-mahomes-returns">Chiefs parted ways with the quarterback</a> shortly after the regular season finale. That allowed him to reunite with his former team, as the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nfl/bills-sign-quarterback-cut-by-chiefs-before-2026-nfl-playoffs">Bills signed Buechele before the 2026 NFL playoffs</a>.



Though Mahomes might recover on time for Week 1, the Chiefs are expected to add at least one quarterback in the offseason, with free agency in March and the 2026 NFL Draft in April as key dates to keep an eye on.

“It sounds like he’s going to want some time to decompress after a long and hard 19-year run, that included a Super Bowl title in Pittsburgh, and he’ll have time to think about what he wants to do next and with the rest of his life. Mike Tomlin is going to be desired in any number of places. He could have a coaching job tomorrow if that’s what he wanted. I don’t believe, I don’t sense that that’s what he’s going to want at this particular time.”



Tomlin was unable to achieve the goal of winning the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/super-bowl">Super Bowl</a> with <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/aaron-rodgers">Aaron Rodgers</a>, and after nine years without a playoff victory, the situation became untenable. As a result, he made the decision to step down.



<h2>Did Steelers fire Mike Tomlin?</h2>



No. The Pittsburgh Steelers did not fire Mike Tomlin. The head coach informed the team that he no longer wanted to remain in charge and chose to step down. This is very important because the Steelers will retain his contractual rights. If Tomlin signs with another team, there would have to be draft pick compensation.

Schefter mentioned that one of the strongest possibilities for Mike Tomlin is becoming a TV analyst. “Look, we’ll hear from Mike Tomlin at some point in time, but my sense is that he’s going to go into television. That there’ll be any number of opportunities that await him. Now, he could decide to do TV, which is what Sean Payton did during the year that he was out. It keeps people involved in the game without having to work coaches’ hours or he simply could just take the year off.”

He also revealed that he views a potential reunion between Mike Kafka and Reid in a positive light: “Andy (Reid) just rarely brings somebody out of his circle. Perhaps the Minnesota Vikings’ failure to secure a playoff berth can be traced back to the constant shuffling at one of the most critical positions on the field. Whether due to injury, inconsistent play, or other circumstances, <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/jj-mccarthy">JJ McCarthy</a>, Carson Wentz, and Max Brosmer all saw action during a 9–8 campaign that ultimately left Kevin O’Connell‘s team well short of its preseason aspirations.



It’s a situation the head coach is determined not to repeat next season, and he told reporters that building a deeper quarterback room will be a priority — even raising the standard across the board. In that sense, McCarthy’s grip on the starting job may not be completely secure, based on O’Connell’s comments.



“Ultimately, I think in the quarterback room, it’s about having just the deepest, [most] talented room you possibly can, every single year,” the HC told reporters on Tuesday. “What that looks like at a pretty impactful position on your salary cap, when you’re able to possibly plan for your depth chart looking in a way where you can be competitive no matter what.”



He also added: “I think there has to be (competition at quarterback). I think that’s what’s gonna make everybody better in that room. It’s gonna be what makes our entire offense thrive through that competition.”

While injuries once again proved to be a recurring issue for McCarthy — though nowhere near as severe as during his rookie season — increasing internal competition within the quarterback room could ultimately benefit the former Wolverine, according to the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/minnesota-vikings">Vikings</a>‘ head coach.

“J.J., I was really encouraged by the type of football he started to play towards the second half of the season and finishing the way he did,” O’Connell said. “We spend a lot of time talking about what the layers of change really were, and I think we all just tried to have a mindset on completions and however we could generate them, we started to see a little bit of that show up.



“We saw some explosives show up. We saw the ability to kind of balance that with what I thought at many points this year, our run game was productive enough for us to move the football and stay in a lot of games.”

<h2>McCarthy’s numbers this season</h2>



In his first season as a starter in 2025, J.J. McCarthy recorded 1,632 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions, finishing the year with a 35.7 QBR. Despite showing flashes of his potential, his debut campaign was severely hampered by a series of injuries, including a high-ankle sprain, a concussion, and a late-season hairline fracture in his right hand. These setbacks forced him to miss seven games, limiting him to just 10 starts and preventing him from finding a consistent rhythm in the Vikings’ offense.
