The Kansas City Chiefs concluded Day 1 of the 2025 NFL Draft by selecting Josh Simmons. A few hours later, head coach Andy Reid made one thing clear to the left tackle upon his arrival to the AFC West team.

Last season, the Chiefs came close to achieving a historic feat. The AFC West club aimed to win its third consecutive Super Bowl, but the Philadelphia Eagles crushed those dreams and claimed the Vince Lombardi Trophy.

Throughout the entire season, the Chiefs struggled with injuries, especially on offense. Now, the club has bolstered the offensive line by acquiring Josh Simmons, who is expected to bring more stability for the 2025 NFL season.

In a surprising turn of events, the Chiefs traded down one spot in the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft. They gave the 31st pick to the Philadelphia Eagles, feeling comfortable moving down one place to gain better draft capital.

With the 32nd selection, the Chiefs picked Josh Simmons, one of the top tackles available. He had a strong tenure with Ohio State, though his 2024 season was less than ideal.

Unfortunately, Simmons suffered a significant knee injury in October that cut his season short. The Buckeyes went on to win the National Championship earlier this year, but Simmons wasn’t able to be a part of it.

While Simmons was regarded as a top prospect, his health issues raised concerns among scouts. Nevertheless, the Chiefs are confident he will return in good shape and be ready to contribute as a starter as soon as possible.

“[I]t’s healed well,” Reid said in his press conference about Simmons’ knee. “He’s gone through all the re-checks that he’s been required to do. And we’ll just see where it goes from there, whether he does the rookie minicamp or not. We’ll just see once he gets here what he can do there. But he’s done well. Those are normally six month or so injuries and he’s right about that time out from being injured.

He’ll definitely be ready for training camp, yeah. But he’ll be able to do some stuff up until then, before that.”

The team is expected to strengthen the defensive line and provide Patrick Mahomes with more offensive weapons, particularly at wide receiver. However, they could still make additional moves to increase their activity and gain more picks for Rounds 2 and 3.
