The Washington Commanders are no longer looking to be a surprise next NFL season. To ensure that, they’re working to strengthen their roster in the best way possible. Deebo Samuel was the key player in one of the offseason’s most talked-about arrivals and expressed excitement about being part of Jayden Daniels‘ team.

During a recent press conference where he was officially introduced, the former San Francisco 49ers star was asked why he’s eager to play for the Commanders, and the wide receiver gave a very clear and direct response.

“I like winners,” Samuel said. “I like to win. I’m not one of your biggest losers. They went to the NFC Championship. I’ve been knowing Adam Peters for a while. And it’s close to home.”

Additionally, he made it clear what he will bring to Dan Quinn’s team: “One, they’re getting a motivated Deebo,” he said. “Two, you’re going to get a dog out here. I’m ready to come in here and work.”

His decision to leave the 49ers

Deebo Samuel entered the NFL after being selected by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2019 Draft. Six years later, the talented wide receiver decided to seek new opportunities in the league and chose Washington as his new destination, something he says wasn’t an easy decision.

“Man, it was tougher than what people think,” Samuel said about his decision to leave the 49ers. “One of the hardest things was walking into the office and talking to Kyle [Shanahan] about this, just because of the relationship we’ve built over six years.”

“He was my coach at the Senior Bowl, so he’s always been a man of his word,” Samuel also added. “It was a tough conversation for sure, but at the end of the day, we both understood. He understood where I was coming from, I understood where he was coming from, and we got to this point now.”

The duo with Terry McLaurin

Jayden Daniels had the privilege of playing his rookie season alongside Terry McLaurin, one of the most talented WRs in the league. Now, he’ll have the chance to throw the ball to Deebo Samuel as well, and it was the former 49er who expressed great excitement about forming a duo with the former Ohio State star.

“I’m ready to come in here and work right alongside of Terry,” Samuel said to the press. “We got drafted together…he’s been playing at a high level for the past six years–we’re going on seven–so they kind of consider us old, but I don’t consider us old. I think these young legs (are) still moving (and) his body’s still working pretty well.”
