Jim Harbaugh knows college players inside and out, and he believes Omarion Hampton could be the difference-maker the Los Angeles Chargers need to turn things around next season — especially with the franchise seeking a reliable option in clutch moments throughout the year.
“This is a player that can play on 3rd down really well. Gives Justin someone to throw to out of the backfield, good pass protector. His game is really well rounded. Bigger back, 220 pounds. But can still run in the 4.4s and like I said before, can score the ball,” Harbaugh said when asked about Hampton.
The goal isn’t just to add a young, talented back — it’s to give the Chargers someone who can step up in critical situations. When Harbaugh sees Justin Herbert running out of options on third down, Hampton is expected to be the go-to guy.
The Chargers Were Already Sold on Hampton
Another key detail in Hampton’s arrival is that the Chargers had already made up their minds. The franchise was fully convinced that he was the running back they needed to bring more physicality to the position. It wasn’t just Harbaugh pushing for him — the front office was all in.
“Hortiz and Harbaugh have both said the front office and coaching staff were ‘unanimous’ on taking Hampton at 22 when they had their pre-draft meeting on Tuesday,” reported Alex Insdorf on X, following the selection of the newly drafted back.
