The Detroit Lions will look to once again be a contender, just as they were in the 2024 NFL regular season, where Jared Goff‘s team was the best in the NFC. In this case, the front office has already taken action and signed a backup quarterback from the Pittsburgh Steelers, marking another loss for Mike Tomlin.
The Steelers have experienced several key departures so far this offseason. Quarterbacks Russell Wilson and Justin Fields are now free agents, with the former Chicago Bears player signing with the New York Jets. Additionally, star running back Najee Harris also left the team after his fifth-year option was declined, making him a free agent. Now, Tomlin is also without a backup at the quarterback position.
The new teammate of star QB Goff on the Lions is none other than backup quarterback Kyle Allen. During the last campaign, he saw action in just two plays, completing 1 of 1 pass for 19 yards, delivering a very limited performance.
Allen will join the Lions‘ quarterback room alongside Goff, Hendon Hooker, and Jake Fromm, giving the team multiple options for the upcoming season. This will be the sixth team in the 29-year-old’s career, having played for the Washington Commanders, Houston Texans, Buffalo Bills, and Steelers over the past four seasons.

Who will be the Steelers’ quarterback for the 2025 NFL season?
For now, the most important priority for Pittsburgh this offseason is deciding who will be its starting quarterback for the 2025 NFL season, as Fields will not be returning. The Black & Gold franchise has made an offer to veteran Aaron Rodgers, who is taking his time to respond. At the same time, another strong option is making a proposal to Russell Wilson.

So far, Tomlin has brought in backup quarterbacks to fill the significant gap at the position. The Steelers re-signed free agent Mason Rudolph, who played for the Tennessee Titans last season. They also added Skylar Thompson to gain depth to the position.
