Mike Tomlin and the Pittsburgh Steelers are keeping the door open for Aaron Rodgers, who’s still undecided about his future even after the 2025 NFL Draft. Still, the team isn’t letting its interest in the star quarterback affect other roster moves.

As a matter of fact, the Steelers didn’t hesitate to part ways with a former teammate of Rodgers. On Monday, NFL insider Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that Pittsburgh is releasing defensive tackle Montravius Adams.

Adams, 29, spent four years with Rodgers on the Green Bay Packers, who drafted him with the No. 93 pick in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft. During his time at Lambeau Field, the Auburn product made three starts in 45 appearances.

While Tomlin and the coaches certainly had reasons not to deem Adams untouchable, the financial aspect may be the biggest reason behind his release. Adams was set to count $3.125 million against the salary cap. With his exit, the Steelers will save $2.25M.

His departure, however, creates an intriguing question as Tomlin will have to identify the new backup nose tackle for Keeanu Benton. Derrick Harmon and Yahya Black, both selected in the 2025 NFL Draft, are expected to compete for that job.
