Aaron Rodgers joining the Pittsburgh Steelers this NFL offseason has dramatically shifted the AFC landscape. The veteran quarterback and four-time MVP is already practicing under head coach Mike Tomlin, and a pleasant surprise has reportedly emerged from within the rookie class during team workouts.
Rodgers signed a one-year deal with the goal of competing for a Super Bowl right away. His addition was backed by Tomlin, who said Rodgers’ experience and leadership fit the competitive culture of the franchise, which is aiming to win its first playoff game in eight years.
With a revamped defense and a mix of young and veteran talent on offense, the Steelers have high expectations for the 2025 NFL season, especially in an increasingly competitive AFC North. In that context, the team is placing early trust in one of its promising rookies.
Steelers’ rookie poised to start in 2025
Defensive line coach Karl Dunbar confirmed that first-round pick Derrick Harmon is already being considered a starter heading into the 2025 season. Despite being a rookie, the cornerback has impressed the coaching staff throughout training camp and practices.

“He goes out there with the ones. He’s our left starting defensive tackle. You can write that,” Dunbar said, according to PennLive.com. The Steelers’ defensive line coach praised the rookie’s smooth integration into the team.

A tough spot for the Steelers
The decision to name Harmon a starter is no small move. Pittsburgh has struggled in its secondary over the past few seasons, particularly against elite AFC quarterbacks. His ability to cover in zone schemes and contribute as a blitzer makes him a valuable asset in the team’s defensive setup.
