In a recent press conference, Russell Wilson spoke about having Jaxson Dart‘s presence in the New York Giants locker room. Given that one is a Super Bowl winner and the other is an NFL rookie, it’s always intriguing to see what the vet has to say about his new teammate.

Wilson’s reputation is a weird one. While some have catalogued him as a diva, others say he is a very good teammate. When asked about his leadership and having Dart around, Wilson stated “It doesn’t change anything at all.”

DangeRuss, as he has nicknamed himself, also said that the first-year player is a “great worker, great teammate.” Wilson is expected to start for the Giants this season, but being on a one-year contract, he should know mentoring Dart is also part of his duties.

Jaxson Dart is the Giants’ new hope

Just like in Star Wars, one guy is coming to fulfill what once was another man’s destiny. Back in 2019, the Giants drafted Daniel Jones in hopes of having an immediate heir to what Eli Manning built for the G-Men. After ‘Danny Dimes’ failed to deliver, they now move on to Dart. However, instead of sending him straight to the wolves, they hope Wilson and veteran Jameis Winston help mentor their new signal-caller.

Dart was picked 25th overall by the Giants. To succeed in the NFL, the Ole-Miss alumn will have to replicate those college numbers. In his last season, he lit the SEC up throwing for 4,279 yards and 29 TDs. He was only picked six times and had a completion percentage of 69.3.

Dart is actually in a good situation

While college numbers don’t necessarily translate to the big leagues, having Russell Wilson showing him the ins-and-outs of the game can go a long way in Dart’s development.

The Giants are not exactly a Super Bowl contender, so at first, Dart is without pressure of delivering immediately. Not only that, but his head coach is Brian Daboll. The former Bills OC helped develop Josh Allen into a superstar caliber QB. Remember, when Allen first stepped into the league, he was green and very few predicted what he’d become.

Having a good coach and a mentor is great. However, there’s another key factor for QB success: you need a guy that can catch passes. While the Giants haven’t been good in the last decade or so, they did strike the lotto last year drafting Malik Nabers.

He instantly became the Giants’ best receiver and he’ll make Dart’s life easier. Nabers posted 1,204 yards and 7 TDs in 15 games without a decent QB. If Dart can be at least competent, New York will have a great duo for the foreseaable future.
