NFL News: Steelers could sign surprising quarterback if Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson reject them

If Aaron Rodgers and Russell Wilson turn down the Pittsburgh Steelers' offer, the team may look to a surprising alternative to fill their quarterback position. With key options on the table and limited choices remaining, Pittsburgh could take an unexpected route.

The Pittsburgh Steelers could sign Mason Rudolph while they wait for a final decision from Aaron Rodgers. The information about the possible return of the quarterback was revealed by Dejan Kovacevic.

“The Steelers have reached out to Mason Rudolph, eyeing a return to the quarterback position that’s currently vacant, a source in the Rudolph camp told me. Omar Khan’s expressed to that camp a willingness to have Rudolph, a free agent who spent last season with the Titans after his previous NFL career was in Pittsburgh, be part of the solution in Pittsburgh, behind a different player starting, possibly Aaron Rodgers.”

In 2018, the Steelers selected Rudolph in the third round of the draft, seeing the potential for him to be Ben Roethlisberger’s successor and keep the team as a Super Bowl contender. However, Mason never got a real chance to start, and in 2024, he signed as a free agent with the Titans.

Who will be the Steelers quarterback in 2025?

Aaron Rodgers or Russell Wilson are the options to be the starting quarterback for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2025. Currently, there are no other strong names on the market, as Matthew Stafford remained with the Rams and Sam Darnold signed with the Seahawks.

Additionally, Geno Smith was traded to the Raiders, and with the 21st pick in the draft, the Steelers don’t seem to have a chance to get a top quarterback. In this moment of uncertainty, Rudolph would at least represent having someone signed at the position in case of an emergency. For example, if Rodgers and Wilson rule out Pittsburgh.
