Sean McVay wants to build a strong supporting cast around Matthew Stafford. That’s why the Los Angeles Rams head coach has brought back—for the third time—a familiar quarterback to back up the future Hall of Famer.
Sean McVay’s tenure with the Rams has been nothing short of impressive. He led Los Angeles to its second Super Bowl title, thanks in large part to his roster-building skills and leadership.
Much of that success began with the trade for Matthew Stafford. While the veteran quarterback has been a game-changer, his injury history has forced the Rams to prepare contingency plans for his absences.

On Thursday, reports surfaced that the Rams are set to sign quarterback Dresser Winn once again. According to James Larsen of UFLNewsroom.com, Los Angeles is bringing him back to bolster Stafford’s support group heading into the 2025 NFL season.
Winn is no stranger to the Rams. He went undrafted in 2023 but was picked up by the team shortly after the draft. He was waived in August of that year but rejoined the practice squad in November.
The former UT Martin quarterback has never made the Rams’ 53-man roster. Though he signed a futures/reserve contract at the start of 2024, he was waived again in August—his second release from the team.

Still, McVay believes in giving chances. Now, for a third time, Dresser Winn will get the opportunity to prove himself. He’ll have to compete with Jimmy Garoppolo and Stetson Bennett for a spot on the final roster.
Winn has yet to play an NFL snap. He spent last season with the Memphis Showboats of the UFL, and now hopes that his experience there will help him finally earn a permanent role with the Rams.
