The Vancouver Canucks’ pursuit of restricted free agent Mason McTavish is reportedly facing setbacks as interest from the New York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Montreal Canadiens intensifies this offseason.

The Vancouver Canucks have been eyeing Anaheim Ducks restricted free agent Mason McTavish as a potential solution for their second-line center role. The 22-year-old, drafted third overall in 2021, has emerged as one of the most sought-after young players on the market, with interest not only from Vancouver but also the New York Rangers, Auston Matthews’ Toronto Maple Leafs, and the Montreal Canadiens.

With training camps roughly five weeks away, McTavish remains unsigned, forcing speculation over whether Anaheim might consider a blockbuster trade. However, recent updates suggest the Ducks have no plans to move their rising star, potentially closing the door on any Canucks acquisition.

According to Anthony Di Marco of Daily Faceoff, “I don’t think the Ducks will move McTavish, especially considering the fact that they moved on from Zegras in large part to the former’s long-term role with the club. My best guess is that a bridge deal ultimately gets done.”

Are the Ducks really willing to trade McTavish?

Initial reports from Patrick Johnston of The Province connected the Canucks to McTavish, noting their interest alongside other roster upgrade targets like Jack Roslovic. While the price to acquire him was always expected to be steep—starting with a young, right-shot defenseman with top-pairing potential—it now appears Anaheim’s stance has hardened.

Following the Zegras trade, McTavish is viewed internally as a future cornerstone. Any trade would require an overwhelming offer, making the odds of him leaving Southern California this summer extremely slim.

What’s next for the Canucks’ second-line center search?

If McTavish is indeed staying in Anaheim, Canucks GM Patrik Allvin will need to pivot quickly. Options on the market are limited, but unrestricted free agent Jack Roslovic remains available and could be signed without sacrificing key roster pieces.
