During New York Rangers development camp last month, Carey Terrance was putting in work on the ice, running through drills with determination. Though new to the Rangers after being acquired in the trade that sent veteran forward Chris Kreider to the Anaheim Ducks, Terrance was eager to impress the team’s coaching staff.
Despite a few rough spots—some details off and a finish that needed sharpening—Terrance’s attitude stood out. After the session, development coach Jed Ortmeyer approached the 20-year-old forward to discuss expectations and gauge his mindset. Terrance’s response was immediate and revealing: he wanted to be coached and was hungry to improve.
“He was like, ‘Yes, let me know. I want to be coached. You’re never going to hurt my feelings. I want to know,’” Ortmeyer said, according to NHL.com. “That was great to hear. He wants to be coached. He wants to get better and he’s hungry. He’s eager to learn and he wants to be great.”
What is Carey Terrance’s winning formula?
Terrance scored two goals in seven games at the 2025 World Juniors, but emphasized his most important contributions came on defense. “Defense wins championships,” Terrance said. “That was a big thing my last two years in the World Juniors and U-18s, that was kind of my role—play on the PK, win face-offs and be reliable. That’s something I’ve taken pride in my four years of junior and tournaments like that.”

What sets Terrance apart as a prospect?
Former U.S. World Juniors coach David Carle praised Terrance not only for his skill but for his character and leadership. Terrance’s willingness to take on any role with a positive attitude, combined with his vocal presence and competitive spirit, make him a model teammate. His 200-foot game and playoff mentality set him apart as a player ready to contribute at the NHL level.
