NHL News: Auston Matthews’ Maple Leafs reportedly willing to give Brad Marchand a strong reason to leave Panthers

The Toronto Maple Leafs aren’t backing down in their pursuit for Florida Panthers pending free agent Brad Marchand. Determined to finally break the Stanley Cup hex in the 2025-26 NHL season, Toronto is hoping to add a key teammate for Auston Matthews and company.

Marchand’s time in Florida might be coming to an end. With the NHL entering the final hours of its calendar year, the 37-year-old could become an unrestricted free agent. Needless to say, he will entertain offers from almost every franchise in the league.

However, only a handful of teams are legit contenders to sign Marchand. Matthews‘ Maple Leafs are among them. After losing to Marchand every time their paths crossed in the postseason, Toronto is desperate to turn the tide. It seems the Leafs must get past him to win the Stanley Cup—and acquiring him could solve a big part of their problems.

What are the Maple Leafs cooking?

Marchand is seemingly content in Sunrise, reportedly willing to take a pay cut to stay in the Sunshine State. The former Bruins captain has fit right in with the land where beaches, plastic rats, and hockey have combined for back-to-back Stanley Cups. Regardless, the Maple Leafs might have an ace up their sleeve to convince the two-time champion in the NHL.

“I do think the Maple Leafs will be in there with a very strong bid, probably a 4 year contract. It wouldn’t surprise me if it got all the way to $9 million, but certainly north of $8 million,” insider Chris Johnston said on the Chris Johnston Show.

While Marchand and the Panthers have yet to come to terms on a contract extension, Florida is still in prime position to re-sign the veteran. The Cats are currently facing negotiations on two fronts, as Aaron Ekblad has yet to put pen to paper, as well.

However, that also means the Panthers have yet to make their best offer to Marchand. If they forego Ekblad, they can pitch an even bigger contract to Marchand—and viceversa.

“Florida already made offer but may be able to go higher depending on Ekblad situation,” insider Jimmy Murphy said on his X, formerly Twitter, account.

However, it’s looking like Ekblad won’t be going anywhere. “Being told Aaron Ekblad is staying in Florida,” insider Elliotte Friedman reported.
