As the Chicago Blackhawks continue their negotiations with one key teammate of Connor Bedard, the team got itself some leverage after signing a new player to its ranks.

The Chicago Blackhawks had been quiet for most of NHL free agency, but they’ve seemingly sprung into action. Hoping to add some insurance in case the ongoing legal dispute involving one of Connor Bedard‘s teammates turns sour, the Hawks have acquired another goaltender.

The Blackhawks aren’t leaving anything to chance. Or so it seems. After RFA Arvid Soderblom filed for salary arbitration, the Hawks have now earned themselves some sort of leverage amid an intense negotiation with the backup goalie.

The 25-year-old netminder was previously signed to a two-year, $1.93M deal. After a somewhat bounce-back production during the 2024-25 NHL season, the Swedish goaltender is seeking proper compensation. If the two parties fail to reach an agreement, an arbitrator will step in.

Most cases never reach the stages of arbitration, and it’s mainly used as a power move from the RFAs who can access such measure. However, the Blackhawks may have answered back by signing a new goaltender, showing there’s a B plan already in place if Soderblom is to become an unrestricted free agent.

The Blackhawks have signed Stanislav Berezhnoy to a two-year entry-level contract. The 22-year-old Russian goalie is coming off a superb season in the VHL — Russia’s second-tier league. Chicago could be in for a pleasant surprise with the young netminder’s arrival. Still, he’s expected to join the Rockford IceHogs in the AHL.

Moreover, the Blackhawks have also sent a message to the restricted free agents on the roster with the re-signing of Louis Crevier. Namely, the pressure has now shifted to Soderblom and Wyatt Kaiser, who have yet to extend their contracts.

Crevier’s re-signing could be vital for Bedard and company as the towering blueliner can turn the ice on the Hawks’ favor. At 6’8”, not many players in the NHL can stand up to Chicago’s former seventh-round selection. The Blackhawks have secured his services through the 2026-27 season, inking the defenseman to a $1.98M contract.
