The Dallas Stars are looking for a new head coach following Pete DeBoer’s departure after the 2024-25 NHL season. The franchise, which features star forward Mikko Rantanen, has reportedly already identified a potential replacement and is close to finalizing the hire: an assistant coach from the Edmonton Oilers of the star forward Connor McDavid.
The experience of being part of the Oilers’ coaching staff is highly valued when teams search for a new tactical leader. Managing key players like Connor McDavid adds a level of expertise that is particularly attractive for franchises aiming to take the next step.
The Stars proved to be one of the NHL’s most solid teams and are now looking to go even further. Last season, they finished with a 50–26–6 record, securing second place in the Central Division and third in the Western Conference. With DeBoer out, the organization now has the chance to bring in a new head coach to lead the next phase.
Who could be the new coach of the Stars?
The Dallas Stars are reportedly very close to hiring Glenn Gulutzan as their next head coach, according to NHL insider Elliotte Friedman. Additionally, TSN’s Darren Dreger confirmed that Gulutzan has already received a formal offer and contract details are currently being negotiated.

Glenn Gulutzan, the possible new coach of the Stars
Gulutzan, who recently played an important role as an assistant with the Oilers during their back-to-back Stanley Cup Final runs, is a familiar face in Dallas, having coached the franchise from 2011 to 2013.

What would Gulutzan bring to the Stars?
The potential arrival of Gulutzan marks an important shift for the Dallas franchise. In Edmonton, he oversaw one of the league’s most dangerous power-play units, featuring stars like McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. If finalized, he would return to Dallas as the sixth head coach of the Jim Nill era, bringing a fresh tactical perspective and valuable playoff experience.
