Elias Pettersson and the Vancouver Canucks took many steps back in the 2024-25 NHL season, failing to live up to the expectations set by them the previous year. Far from building on their run to the 2024 Western Conference semifinals, the Canucks didn’t even reach the Stanley Cup playoffs last season.
It was a particularly tough year for Pettersson, who looked like a shell of himself during his time on the ice. One only needs to look at his stats to know that his production wasn’t up to his standard: only 45 points (15 goals, 30 assists) in 64 games.
But the 2024-25 NHL season is in the rearview mirror now, and Pettersson has already turned the page. Apart from sending a clear message to Adam Foote and teammates vowing to bounce back, the 26-year-old is looking forward to another event on the horizon.
Pettersson proud of being with Team Sweden
Pettersson is among multiple stars excited for the return of NHL players to the Olympics, and he’s already preparing for the 2026 Winter Games with Sweden. Even if last season was one to forget, the Swedish forward is proud of being called up for his country’s orientation camp.

Elias Pettersson #40 of the Vancouver Canucks competes in the NHL Passing Challenge during 2024 NHL All-Star Skills Competition.
“I feel proud to be standing here with all these great players,” Pettersson said in Stockholm, via the NHL’s official website. “If you ask me, everyone is a natural fit for the Olympic team.”

While rediscovering his best form with the Canucks in the NHL will be a priority for Pettersson, the opportunity of chasing Olympic glory will inevitably occupy a significant space on his mind. With a number of roster spots open, the forward aims to make the cut.
Pettersson happy with Team Sweden orientation camp invitation
Being back with his fellow countrymen has already been quite refreshing for Pettersson after a rough year. Needless to say, most players dream of representing their countries, which is why Pettersson is enjoying the moment.
“Great fun. Fun to meet old teammates, (Jacob) Markström among others, and talk about what’s to come. It was of course great fun when the news came. I’ve never played in the Olympics, so hopefully it will be incredibly fun,” he added.
“It’s always awesome. You have the entire population of Sweden behind you. And you know when you’ve stood in a sea of people cheering when Sweden played in the European Football Championship or something, so I guess people have the same feeling I have when they see us play hockey. It’s insanely awesome.”

The upcoming season, therefore, will present varied opportunities for Pettersson. While leading the Canucks to a strong start in the NHL will come first, later in the year, Milano Cortina 2026 may capture all his attention.
