The future of Artemi Panarin with the New York Rangers is beginning to raise questions as the franchise prepares for a new era under Mike Sullivan as head coach. The recent addition of the former Pittsburgh Penguins coach could bring significant adjustments to the team’s structure, including key decisions regarding its biggest stars.
Panarin is coming off an outstanding individual season, and with the arrival of Sullivan, known for his intense, structured, and defensively responsible style of play, the Russian forward’s adaptation to the new system will be something to watch closely during training camp.
Sullivan, who won two Stanley Cups with the Penguins, will be tasked with reshaping a franchise that has fallen short in key moments despite the talent on its roster. Panarin will need to decide what he wants for his future, as the clock is now ticking.
Will Panarin stay with the Rangers?
“A bit of a question would be what happens with Artemi Panarin moving forward; I’d have to think there’s a way to work out a new deal for the ‘Breadman’,” said NHL insider Frank Seravalli via Bleacher Report. His comment opens the door to a potential contract extension for the 33-year-old star in New York.

Panarin’s contract situation
The New York Rangers are facing a critical decision regarding Panarin, as the veteran forward is entering the final year of his seven-year, $81.5 million contract, which carries an annual cap hit of $11.64 million. That deal is set to expire at the end of the 2025–26 season, at which point the Russian will become an unrestricted free agent.

With only one year left on the deal, management must decide whether to offer him an extension, estimated at $10–12 million annually for 3–4 years, according to Frank Seravalli. Panarin has led the Rangers in scoring in each of his six seasons with the team and recorded 89 points (37 goals, 52 assists) during the 2024–25 campaign.
