<a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/jt-miller">J.T. Miller</a>, Mike Sullivan, and Vincent Trocheck had the time of their lives during the 2026 Winter Olympics. However, they are no longer on Team USA, and the New York Rangers’ status quo is nowhere near as joyful and celebratory.

Shortly after <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl/ny-rangers-hc-mike-sullivan-issues-bold-reminder-for-j-t-miller-rest-of-the-team-as-nhl-resumes">Sullivan issued a bold reminder for Miller and the Rangers</a>, the captain returned the favor with a comment of his own.



“It’s why it was so special, and something we’re going to remember forever and have that to share, but we’re back to Rangers hockey now. Party’s over, it’s time to focus, and we need to play some good hockey down the stretch,” Miller admitted to reporters, via @SNYRangers on X.

<h2>Miller and Rangers have struggled at home</h2>



As demoralizing as the Broadway Blueshirts have been at home, the organization must still find a way to sell tickets at Madison Square Garden. Miller’s statement may serve as hope for the fanbase in New York. Otherwise, fans would have little reason to attend games.

Given the way the season has unfolded in New York, home fans already know what they are signing up for when they arrive at 4 Pennsylvania Plaza in Midtown. Before the Olympic break, the Rangers were 6–15–4 at home. Needless to say, that was—and remains—the worst home record in the Eastern Conference. It’s been the common theme all season long, what the Rangers do poorly, the Vancouver Canucks take to another level. Thus, only the Canucks (6–17–5) have a worse home mark.



As the season resumes, Sullivan and the Rangers know the Stanley Cup Playoffs are out of reach, but at the very least, they hope to offer their fan base something more than a gut-wrenching spectacle at Madison Square Garden.



<h2>Rangers could set new records for worst home mark</h2>



They say home is where the heart is. For Miller and the Rangers, however, home is where most of their embarrassment has unfolded during the 2025–26 NHL season. Coming out of the Olympic break, New York has 16 home games remaining. The Rangers must truly flip the script, or they risk posting one of the worst home records in franchise history.

According to <a href="https://records.nhl.com/nyr/overview/season-by-season-record">NHL.com</a>, the worst home mark in franchise history came during the 1943–44 season, when the Blueshirts won just four games on home ice. However, that was during a shortened 50-game schedule. In an 82-game campaign, the low was set in 2003–04, when the team won only 11 games at Madison Square Garden. 



The last time New York recorded fewer than 10 home wins in a season was in 1964–65, with eight victories in 35 home games. Numbers do not lie: Sullivan, Miller, and the Rangers are walking a tightrope, with all signs pointing toward a franchise record of the wrong kind in 2025–26.

Pretty much everyone could be made available by the Blueshirts, as Sullivan and company acknowledge it’s time to start from scratch. Or as GM Chris Drury has put it time and again: retool.



On that note, reports suggest the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl/ny-rangers-actively-shopping-former-first-round-pick-amid-vincent-trocheck-speculation">Rangers are actively shopping a former first-round selection</a> in defenseman Braden Schneider. It’s clear New York is focusing on the future rather than the 2025-26 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> season. Still, Sullivan made it clear that the Rangers aren’t tanking nor throwing in the towel.



<h2>Sullivan’s answer</h2>



“It’s a little bit of both,” Sullivan answered a question on whether he will prioritize winning games or developing prospects, via Vince Mercogliano of The Athletic. “We’re going to try to win. We’re going to try to compete. We’re going to try to hold the group accountable to a certain standard.“

Sullivan’s message is not surprising. The first-year head coach in New York City will not openly admit that the Rangers are angling to strengthen their draft position. Not even shining hardware and national pride will suffice.



After a long and frenetic—deservedly so—gold medal celebration, Team USA’s members have to snap back to reality. Like an accountant returning to his regular 9-to-5 job after a bachelor party over the weekend, the Olympic gold medalists must now go back to their daily routines in the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a>. 



Artemi Panarin, who <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl/artemi-panarin-makes-sincere-confession-on-facing-mike-sullivan-ny-rangers-after-trade-to-kings">sent a sincere confession to Sullivan and the Rangers</a>, is no longer in town. His absence should serve as a raw reminder for the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/new-york-rangers">Rangers</a> of what their disappointing results have led to. If they want to keep the rest of the group together, they must pick up the pace. That was exactly what Sullivan told his players in his first practice back in New York.

Taking on the visiting Philadelphia Flyers at Madison Square Garden, the Rangers face an early test to prove they are a different team coming out of the break. New York is 6-15-4 at home this season, a record that paints a clear picture of why the Rangers were the worst team in the East and the third-worst in the league going into the Winter Olympics. 



Maybe Miller, Sullivan, and Trocheck’s experience in Milan will bring winds of change to New York City. Or perhaps the writing is on the wall, and the Rangers are gearing up for a lost battle, no different than lambs headed to the slaughter.

However, he couldn’t embark on his new challenge without bidding farewell to Mike Sullivan and the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/new-york-rangers">New York Rangers</a> first.



That he did. Panarin has now issued a sincere statement for <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/mike-sullivan">Sullivan</a> and the Rangers. Among many things, “The Breadman” voiced a strong confession on his emotions as he is set to return to New York City shortly after transitioning to Los Angeles.



“I’m a little nervous to think about coming back [to New York] in March, but I’m looking forward and can’t wait to see you all,” Panarin admitted in his message for the Rangers, per <a href="https://www.nhl.com/">NHL.com</a> insider Kevin Weekes.



<h2>Panarin returns to NYC to face Rangers</h2>



The <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/los-angeles-kings">Los Angeles Kings</a> will visit the New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden on March 16th. It will be the fifth game on a five-game road trip for the Kings, which will include a visit to the Columbus Blue Jackets—whom Panarin played before signing with the Blueshirts as an unrestricted free agent. Seven years later, Panarin’s time in Manhattan was up, but he is showing no regrets.

As the 2025–26 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> season resumes, Panarin will return to action for the first time since Jan. 26. Hoping to re-ignite his red-hot form, Panarin had served as a healthy scratch for the Rangers in their final four outings before the Olympic break. Now in a new environment, he hopes to pick up where he left off. 



So far, Panarin has registered 19 goals and 38 assists for a grand total of 57 points in 52 games. Despite his missed games, Panarin still leads the Rangers in points. As he joins the Kings, his 57-point total is also the highest of any player on the squad.

On the other hand, those who won’t wear a medal around their necks—or receive any recognition—are the players who were on the bubble and ultimately failed to make the team. 



Much of the controversy stemmed from Sullivan’s decision to name <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/new-york-rangers">New York Rangers</a> forwards J.T. Miller and Vincent Trocheck to <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/team-usa">Team USA</a>, leaving behind stars with better numbers. After the win over Canada, Sullivan addressed that long-standing point of debate with a blunt admission about how Team USA assembled its roster.



“The team was built with personality in mind,” Sullivan told reporters after the gold medal ceremony, via The New York Post’s Mollie Walker. “There are whiskey drinkers and milk drinkers, and we got a lot of whiskey drinkers.”

<h2>Who was Sullivan sending a message?</h2>



After his statement, fans across the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> couldn’t help but wonder whether Sullivan had just taken a rather direct shot at the players who didn’t make the cut, despite their strong performances during the 2025–26 season. Sullivan didn’t give out any names, but if the shoe fits, some may wear it.

Both young forwards shine night in and night out in the NHL. However, at the Olympic level, the game is far more physical, and that appears to be what cost them their seat on the plane to Milan and a spot on the bench at the Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena.



<h2>Sullivan’s bold call pays off</h2>



Hindsight is 20/20, and Sullivan’s call has now proven beneficial. Had Nathan MacKinnon found the back of the net on a wide-open chance or Devon Toews cashed in on a loose puck in the blue paint, the story would look very different. 



Instead of popping champagne and raising a glass, Sullivan might have been met with rotten tomatoes and a deafening chorus of second-guessing. However, it’s nothing compared to what awaits him back home with the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/new-york-rangers">New York Rangers</a>. Now, a report suggests yet another key player could be growing sick and tired with the organization’s present in the NHL. Who? None other than Olympic gold medalist Vladislav Gavrikov, who captured gold while representing the Olympic Athletes from Russia at the 2018 Winter Olympics.



“There’s a lot of rumours. I’m hearing that Vladislav Gavrikov might be looking at where’s the direction of this team. This isn’t necessarily what he signed up for,” Mike Rupp reported on The Daily Faceoff (DFO) Rundown.



Coming off a 30-point production with the Los Angeles Kings in the 2024-25 <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a> season, Gavrikov signed a seven-year, $49 million contract with the Rangers. Now, it seems he might be getting cold feet about his long-term commitment to the Blueshirts.



<h2>Not that easy for Gavrikov to ask for trade</h2>



Still, asking for a trade out won’t be easy for him. Gavrikov holds a no movement clause (NMC) on his contract, but unless he gives New York a reason to deal him away, the Rangers might have no interest in parting ways with him. Whether Gavrikov truly wants out remains to be seen, too.

Though both players share Russian nationality, Vladislav Gavrikov’s situation is not the same as Artemi Panarin’s. The latter was set to become an unrestricted free agent (UFA), and because of his full no-movement clause (NMC), he could decide where he wanted to be traded. If the New York Rangers didn’t agree to those terms, he could simply walk away as a UFA, leaving the organization empty-handed.

Thinking things will be different upon returning to Madison Square Garden is like leaving home with a frying pan unattended and expecting to find the kitchen unscathed when you get back. Mike Sullivan knows his New York Rangers are a work in progress—one he’ll have to fully dive back into after a much-needed Euro winter at the 2026 Winter Olympics.



In more ways than one, Sullivan hopes Team USA can go all the way. Obviously, that would mean accomplishing what no head coach has since Herb Brooks led a group of amateur players to gold at the 1980 Winter Olympics. Team USA hasn’t captured Olympic gold since, and Sullivan could cement his legacy among the all-time greats by adding that achievement to his résumé.



<h3>Sullivan and Team USA chase history while coach avoids NHL drama</h3>



At the same time, extending his stay in Italy allows him to postpone the inevitable. Sullivan knows that the moment he walks back through the doors of Madison Square Garden, drama will greet him head-on. Like a couple stretching out their honeymoon to delay returning to the chaos of everyday life, Sullivan hopes his time in Milan can last a little longer.



As demanding as coaching Team USA—and carrying the weight of a nation’s expectations—can be, Sullivan also knows he has an All-Star roster at his disposal. The Stars and Stripes look like a video-game lineup, but back in New York, the tune is far less harmonious. The few bright notes that remain are slowly but steadily heading for the exit. Now, Vladislav Gavrikov could be the latest name added to that list.

Still, not everything is bad for the Blueshirts and Walters is now reminding New York of the talented forward it boasts in its ranks.



“There’s probably not a better shooter in the Ontario Hockey League than Liam Greentree, we’re lucky to have him,” Walters said, hinting at the kind of talent the Rangers could use going forward in the 2025-26 NHL season, via SNY. 



<h2>Reading between the lines</h2>



Walters and the Spitfires would love to have Greentree forever, but they know—sooner or later—he will be off to New York City and the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl">NHL</a>. When that day comes, Walters is setting the record straight, reminding Sullivan to take advantage of a player of Greentree’s caliber. However, developing young players with potential has been the Blueshirts’ Achilles’ heel as of late.

Still, that is looking ahead. As things stand, the Spitfires will boast Greentree for a while, and he will keep putting up impressive numbers in the OHL. So far, Greentree has registered 48 points (24 goals and 24 assists) in 36 games. 



Last season, he finished second in scoring for the Spitfires with 119 points. With Sullivan’s Rangers struggling mightily to score in bunches and with consistency, Greentree could be part of the solution.

All in all, it seems Panarin, Drury, and the Rangers had a lot to tell one another. However, both opted to wait until it was all said and done to go at each other’s throats. That goes to show exactly why the story between Panarin and New York had its ending already written in stone.

After so much talk surrounding Florida-based organizations or clear-cut Stanley Cup contenders like the Colorado Avalanche, why did Panarin decide he would only play for the Kings? The move made even less sense after <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/nhl/artemi-panarins-contract-details-with-la-kings-revealed-as-ny-rangers-reportedly-accept-sacrifice-in-trade">Panarin’s Kings contract details were revealed</a>. It didn’t take a genius to assume he could’ve signed for more with another organization.

<h2>Troubling news for Rangers</h2>



The Rangers may react angrily to the information provided by Panarin. At the end of the day, a player like Gavrikov was brought on board to help the team on the ice and build a winning culture in the locker room—not serve as a PR assistant for other teams. 



However, whether it was Gavrikov pumping the tires on Los Angeles or any other factor, Panarin would’ve made a decision either way. Whether he chose the Kings or another team, that side would’ve offered New York a similar deal, as the Blueshirts were essentially forced to work something out before the deadline.

With the <a href="https://bolavip.com/en/topic/new-york-rangers">Rangers</a> dragging a 2-8-0 form over their last 10 outings, the ‘hope core’ type messages are simply not doing it anymore for New York.

More precisely, about the costly penalties the team is taking. Indeed, the penalties help explain the current form, but limiting the reasons to that alone would be a massive understatement.



“We’re taking too many penalties, and they’re just lack of discipline penalties,” Sullivan admitted, via The New York Post. “Stick infractions in the offensive zone. It taxes some of our top players because we use them in the kill. I just think we’ve got to be better in certain areas of our game to give ourselves a better chance to get on the right side of the score.”

Though Sullivan highlighted the amount of penalties taken by the Rangers, the numbers paint a different picture. However, having won just three of their last 17 games, it’s easy to see why Rangers fans are growing impatient with the entire situation.



Panarin wants to play as well, and he has no interest in being left out to dry in New York—especially with both him and Russia set to miss the 2026 Olympics, leaving him uncertain about when his next NHL game will come.
