It’s looking more like a sure thing with every passing day. Mitch Marner‘s time with Auston Matthews and the Toronto Maple Leafs is nearing its end ahead of free agency. After yet another early NHL postseason elimination, Marner has set his sights on new horizons. Although, his interest is reportedly not on the contractual side.
It’s seemingly only a matter of time before Marner enters another facility from the Maple Leafs’ one. Matthews and the rest of the team might still be coming to terms with that. Marner, on the other hand, has seemingly put that matter to rest.
Marner and his agent reportedly haven’t been in touch with the Leafs for over an year. It goes without saying, fans shouldn’t hold their breath in hopes that the relationship will magically heal overnight. It’s almost guaranteed: Marner will walk away from Toronto on July 1st and into a new beginning in the NHL.
Much buzz has surrounded Marner as of late, along with the potential top-dollar contract he might sign with a new team in free agency. Still, the latest reports indicate money or greed aren’t what drives Marner, as many have claimed. Instead, Marner’s wishes are far more simple.

Auston Matthews #34 of the Toronto Maple Leafs looks on during a game against the Philadelphia Flyers at the Wells Fargo Center on January 07, 2025 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
“I don’t believe Mitch Marner leaving Toronto is about chasing the biggest contract, so much focus has been about him possibly being paid $14 million or more. Truly believe this is about a change of scenery and a fresh start,” insider Andy Strickland said on his X account. “He’s been paid crazy money for several years, I don’t think he’s chasing the biggest contract as much as he is a chance to win elsewhere.“

Disaster averted?
There is uncertainty surrounding Marner’s next destination in the NHL. Several suitors have risen with different realities. Rebuilding teams like the Anaheim Ducks and Chicago Blackhawks have the money to sign Marner. However, their present isn’t as attractive to Marner if he wishes to chase a Stanley Cup.
Competitive sides, like the Carolina Hurricanes, seem like a better fit. Carolina currently has $28,415,958 available in cap space, per PuckPedia. Coming off a deflating elimination in the Eastern Conference Final, the Hurricanes could have great use for Marner.
